I have 3 computers networked. 1 is Win 98, 1is XP pro, and 1 is XP home.
The Win 98 and XP pro have been networked for 3 years with no problems. I
recently added the XP home to the network and it can access files from both
of the other computers, but will not allow them to access it. I have
searched all help files and on line help I can find, but none of the fixes
makes any difference. It still says access denied. I would appreciate any
help!!!

Make sure the Windows Firewall on the XP Home machine is allowing file &
printer sharing.

I have already tried that link and it did not help so it was back to square
1! Thanks for your reply.

The Firewall is checked to allow file & printer sharing. I am really

Asymmetrical access problems like yours can come from several causes, and a
forgotten or misconfigured firewall is only one of the possibilities.

Windows XP Home is perfectly compatible with Windows 98, and with Windows XP
Pro. If the above article doesn't help, post "browstat status" and "ipconfig
/all" from the 2 XP computers, and "ipconfig /all" from the Windows 98 computer.

On the XP HOME PC run net user guest /active:yes in a command prompt to
make sure the guest account is enabled.
Can you ping the HOME machine from the others? Vice versa?

I have done that also and I can ping all machines from each other.

The following folder directories by design, cannot be shared over a network from
an XP Home machine:
a. C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)
b. C:\Program Files
c. C:\Windows

You will need to set the sub folders and or directories, to be shared
themselves.

1. So if you wanted to share the crlin's "My Documents" folder. You would have
to go to the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\crlin\My Documents> Right click it> Select Sharing>
Run the Sharing wizard.
You can use a third party program such as TweakUI to move Special Folders from
the default folder directory, to another location on the HDD, and then set the
folder to be shared.

2. For Program Files folders, you decide you want to share a data folder, such
as a
template folder in a word processing program say "WriteMe" (fictitious name). So
you would set Sharing on the following folder:
C:\Program Files\WriteMe or C:\Program Files\WriteMe\Templates.
Another thing you may want to check if within the program, if you can change the
location for saved items created in the program.
