Default Service Pack 2 and internet conncetivity

After installing SP2 on my XP Home Edition, I loose all internet
connectivity. Opening a browser causes the browser to stay up for a second
and then shuts down. In-installing SP2 gives me back my internet
connectivity. What am I doing incorrectly?

IME of putting SP2 onto numerous computers, it very rarely gives trouble.

The most likely reason is that your computer has some kind of unwanted
software on it, which has modified the system in some way.
