Default Consistently getting RenderBadGlyphSet with Internet Explorer

On many web pages (notably ones in the Hebrew language), Internet
Explorer crashes wine with this message:

X Error of failed request: RenderBadGlyphSet (invalid GlyphSet
parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 156 (RENDER)
Minor opcode of failed request: 24 (RenderCompositeGlyphs16)
GlyphSet id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: something...
Current serial number in output stream: something else

Before that, I get a lot of these (substitute arbitrary hexadecimal
numbers for ??):

fixme:font:WineEngGetGlyphOutline FT_Load_Glyph on index ?? returns 6
err:xrender:UploadGlyph GetGlyphOutlineW failed

Anyone know this problem, what it means, how to overcome it, etc.?
