Default Another cab for my Trace stack? (Ashdown ABM Mini 15T) (stack head)

Hi all

I want to get another (smaller) cab for my Trace AH600SMX GP12 amp head. I
already have one 300Watt (8ohm) 4x10 Trace cab.

I was looking at this 300Watt 8ohm cab:
http://www.soundslive.co.uk/common/moreinfo.asp?ID=1452. The reason for
wanting that cab is it's size. And the fact that is is smaller than my 4x10,
which really is a bastard to try and carry around to small gigs and
rehearsals.

But how would it affect my sound? I play a lot of riffs on the low end of
the B-string (as we do heavy prog-metal) so my logic tells me that a 15
together with my 4x10 would do the job but then I don't have any experience
with a multiple cab setup.

And has anyone here actually owned one if these? I don't know the brand at
all.

Any input would be appreciated

Cheers
Jake

Default Another cab for my Trace stack? (Ashdown ABM Mini 15T) (stack head them)

Hi Jake

Ashdown was started by two guys who used to run Trace Elliot. (Mark Goody,
and....can't remember the other one ! ).

Like you, I had a Trace (old series6 4x10 combo, AH300SMX head and baby 15
and 2x10H cabs, and my last one 1210H 4x10 combo) and, like you, I fancied
something smaller but still powerful.

I was originally going to buy the cab you suggest until a friend (who has an
Ashdown mini stack) blew the 15 up !
From what I heard of it before that, it sounded warm and surprisingly deep
for it's size.

Maybe you might consider a mini 4x8 ?
I'm using two of them and get a nice warm sound from them, but that's with a
Ashdown head.

If in doubt, try one out with your Trace.

With low B well outside the "usable frequency range" (30Hz v 41Hz) there's
better for bottom end response around but that's already beefier than a lot
of 4x10"s.
It's also a LOT quieter than most 4x10"s on the market needing between 2 and
4 times the power for the same loudness.
Expect to have a lot of lower midrange and overall sound power missing when
compared to the 4x10 - it will on the other hand blend with the kickdrum
nicely on those lower notes.
A couple of other things you might want to bear in mind is that as it's a
LOT smaller, you'll probably want to raise it off the floor or tip it back
so you can hear anything above 1kHz when you're close to it. It's more
likely to flutter your trousers though.
That's as crude as I can make it but I do hope this helps some.

The addition of a 15" cab to your existing 4x10 will, in my opinion, only
enhance your sound with a deeper bottom end, further it will give you a
higher output from your amp, running at 4 ohms as opposed to s single 8.

I think a lot of Ashdown cabs but, as always, go listen before you buy.

My amp's got two seperate 300Watt outputs at 8ohm... the amp can aparently
handle 1200w at 4ohm (600W per channel).. woa that would rock, but that
would probably also heat everything up severely...

I had a Peavey power amp pushing 300W into eash of my mini cabs.

I had a 4x8 and a 1x15 - they coped admirably with the load.

They are awesome, very loud and clear.

I always preferred to sit the 15 on top of the 4x8 though which somehow gave
me a fuller sound (probly a problem with my ears)

I only sold them to pay for a Status series 2000, otherwise I would still
have them.

I miss them.

I cant comment of performance with a 5 string as I have never done it, but
with a 4 string they sound fantastic.
