Would you suggest that Jeff Beck wear a tuxedo or B.B King wear jeans,
musically or literally? There are going to be contrasts, and other than Jeff keeping his volume at a respectable level to fit in, I wouldn't want compromises from either one. I rather agree, but I think that it was because he didn't have his Marshall cranked like he normally would. There is a saying that if you want to be successful as a musician you should 1) learn all you can about music; 2) learn all you can about your instrument; 3) learn all you can about people; and 4) forget all that shit and PLAY. An important ingredient here is the word "play." It doesn't just mean to make notes on your instrument; it means to "have fun," to "play" in a childlike sense. To explore. Experiment. Do something different. Think outside the box. Take risks. Have no fear of failure. Get a little crazy. This is one of Jeff Beck's greatest charms as a player. He brings an element of mischief to his playing, and the smile on his face is infectious. Yes, he's a bit of a loose cannon. It's what makes his playing so entertaining and enjoyable. If Jeff had worn a tux, and limited himself to classic blues stylings to "fit with the band," I would have felt very cheated, because that wouldn't be Jeff Beck.
