Default The Roots' Martin Luther.. (so the band them think time)

I say these guys perform about 3 weeks ago. It was the first time I'd seen
them perform live...I loved it (have they got any live DVD's out?). It was
interesting, I think Bozak mentioned how they like taking it to the
crowd...they did the whole 'Bring the Noize' call and response
routine...except Sydney crowds were not brought up on old school P.E....so
no one really got it. You could see the Black Thought and ?love exchanging
contemptous glances when the crowd failed to respond 'bring the noize...'

Anyway - so there was this new cat in the group named Martin Luther. Well -
he's not that new...upon listening to Phrenology again, he's all over it.
But it was the first time I had seen him as part of the band and it sort of
took me the whole concert to get used to him. He joined them during the
recording of Phrenology (I think).

What do people think of Martin Luther? He's pretty clean cut and definetly
appeals to the lady fans. His deamonour is somewhat disparate to the image
The Roots had developed for themselves...so I actually thought he was a
stand in for that tour or something...i.e. I didn't really think he was with
the band as such (a quick search when I got back home indicated otherwise).
I found myself taking more notice of him than anyone else up on stage...he
exudes charisma Which was interesting (which Black Thought usually doesn't).

After thinking about this a fair bit...I think he's good for the band and
I'd like to hear him on some solely stuff (I might elaborate on this later
sometime)

What's everyone else's opinion on Martin Luther?

Phrenology is HEAVILY slept on. Easily a top 5 contender for release of the
last 12 months.

I might repost my question on okayplayer...it's probably more appropriate.

agreed... I must admit I did take a long while to get to it cos I was
put off by the utter tripe on Common's album... thought it'd be more
of the same...

very pleasantly surprised...

is ben kenney on guitar? in that there was one other unrecognisable guy
playing guitar. The Roots must be doing well for themselves to keep taking
on some many other cats

and

later
