WILL PERFORM RECENT COMPOSITIONS ON OCTOBER 7 AND 10 2004 AT FAUST HARRISON PIANOS Terry Riley will perform new solo piano works and songs, and Michael Harrison will perform an abridged version of his acclaimed work "Revelation: for Harmonically Tuned Piano," at Faust Harrison Pianos, 205 West 58th Street, New York, NY New York, NY (September 13, 2004)---On October 7th & 10th 2004 at 8:00pm, Faust Harrison Pianos will host an evening of new music by the American composer/pianists Terry Riley and Michael Harrison. These performances are part of an ongoing series entitled Pianists for the New Millennium, featuring outstanding pianists performing in a variety of genres from classical and jazz, to contemporary avant-garde. These concerts will also inaugurate the opening of a new performance space/showroom for Faust Harrison Pianos. The new space will accommodate 100 people and creates an intimate environment to hear pianists in a salon-style setting. California composer Terry Riley will offer rare solo piano performances of recent works and songs. In 1964, Mr. Riley revolutionized music with his classic "In C" and launched what is now known as the Minimalist movement. This seminal work provided a new concept in musical form based on interlocking repetitive patterns and it's impact was to change the course of 20th century music. In May of 2000, Riley made his first tour of Russia with solo piano concerts at the Sergei Kuryokin Festival in Saint Petersburg, the Moscow Conservatory, and the Dom. The review of these concerts in Izvestia proclaimed "Terry Riley to be the greatest composer pianist since Prokofiev." Riley was recently listed in the London Sunday Times as "one of the 1000 makers of the 20th Century." Michael Harrison will perform a 45-minute abridged version of his award winning 100-minute odyssey, REVELATION: for Harmonically Tuned Piano. Through his work with ancient principles of harmonic proportion and alternate tuning systems Mr. Harrison has revolutionized the piano. Following a lifelong study of both Western classical and North Indian classical music he has forged "a new harmonic world…" (The New York Times) "…that may well be the path toward music's future" (Stuart Isacoff, editor, Piano Today). Revelation is composed for a contemporary "just intonation" tuning that Harrison invented. The work has been performed internationally and is highly regarded for bringing the piano into the 21st century. This performance of Revelation will consist of five of the thirteen sections of the work: Night Vigil, The Bells of Rome, Tone Cloud III, Finale, and Revelation. This is a rare opportunity to hear the composer playing his own work. Terry Riley and Michael Harrison have been close friends and colleagues for over 20 years. They are both disciples of the late master Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath and have performed concerts of North Indian classical vocal music together for many years. This is the first time they will appear together in the United States performing their own piano music. Tickets for this event are $20.00 general admission and can be purchased by calling 212 352-3101 or go to http://www.theatermania.com to order online and view a complete listing of this event.
