Default Lyric req: Climbing Up the Golden Stairs (time)

not the minstrel song, whose lyrics can be found in the Levy collection,
but the gospel song sung by the Happy Four.

I've spent a *lot* of time trying to decipher OT lyrics, but on a
difficulty scale of 1 to 10, this one comes in at 9.9. Can someone
provide the lyrics or pointers?

Thanks!

Since honkingduck appears not to be working, I cannot listen to the
Happy Four doing this song. If you could send me an mp3 (mono,
compressed about 29x; I'm on a modem), then I could compare to the
version in Ira Ford's "Traditional Music of America", which contains
some politically uncorrect language.

I don't know if this is any help, but here in California in the 1800's
there was a fraternal order called E Clampus Vitas, made up of gold
miners. One of the initiation rituals was called Climbing The Golden
Stairs. The initiate sat on a wet sponge in a wheel barrow that was
pushed over a ladder, making for a wet and bumpy ride.

Default Lyric req: Climbing Up the Golden Stairs (think)

Carl,

I got an error on Honking Duck, but I seemed to get around it to hear
it from Honking Duck by going through the "no-ad" interface. As a real
audio (ram) file. Here's the URL:

http://honkingduck.com/rams/e39f3e7545a55849b5d593e2f64873b6.ram

I don't think it has any politically incorrect language. But they are
hard to discern...

I'm familiar with Vernon Dalhart's version that IS politically

song, it was probably first recorded by Harry C. Browne for Columbia
around 1920. I'm guessing that is the version that Jerry is NOT
interested in.

The Vernon Dalhart version is the same as what is in the Levy
Collection.

The Happy Four version is not...which is what Jerry said!!!

Default Lyric req: Climbing Up the Golden Stairs (the angels them)

Don't get your hopes up, Jerry. I found Uncle Willie's attempts at
deciphering the song, and there are lots of blanks. In the following, a

Four, and I can't make out any more words than Willie did:

1. There is a heavenly land
There is a beautiful strand
Where (?)
And with [a wonderful flight]
We'll [reach] (?) [height]
With the angels, climbing them golden stairs.

CHORUS:
Behold the beckoning hand
[Reach to the heavenly band]
In heaven never know [pain nor fear]
We'll walk the beautiful streets
Where (?)
With the angels, climbing them golden stairs.

2. While (?)
We'll meet (?)
(?) the road (?)
Yes, to that wonderful song
We'll (?)
With the angels, climbing them golden stairs.

3. Come, let us sing and be glad
No cause (?) to be sad,
For Christ forever sorrow shed.
There with the glorified throng
We'll sing a beautiful song
With the angels, climbing them golden stairs.

Willie has a note that the song is also by Smith's Sacred Singers, but
I don't have a tape of that version, and I don't know if it's this one
or the minstrel version.
