Default Re-masters of "Walls and Bridges" & "RnR" ?? (so time)

I'd guess that it was a time he didn't remember too fondly, so he wanted to
distance himself from it as much as he could.

On the other hand, maybe he just thought it was a weak album. "Craftsman
pap" is a generous way of describing "Whatever Gets You Though The Night."

Default Re-masters of "Walls and Bridges" & "RnR" ?? (them)

Nah, it's just a lame song. Rule of thumb with John: When he wrote songs
around his or Yoko's catchphrase slogans, they were pretty good. When the
slogans were already common currency before he got to them, the songs were
best forgotten. ("Power to the People," "Whatever Gets You Through The
Night")

I couldn't agree more. Both are songs I just tend to skip. (WGYTTN is really
the only one on W&B for which I do that, other than "Ya Ya," if you count that
as a song -- I even like Beef Jerky!)

Default Re-masters of "Walls and Bridges" & "RnR" ?? (love the real thing solo)

The "Philadelphia Freedom" thing is the " I love, love, love, love, love
you" thing sung in triplets....

The repetitive "get to the point" thing - also on "Going down on love" -
"When the real thing is gone.....etc, etc..." -it just takes
forever...verses, even on faster songs like "What you got", other
albums, "Remember.....(get coffee, turn on TV)....when you were
small.......(check liner notes for credits, turn up volume), that kind
of thing. This kind of stuff is all over the place on Lennon's solo
material. He needed an editor, and someone to kick up the tempos.

Well, THAT's a very good point! So EJ nicked it off of JL maybe...since
EJ sings on "Surprise Surprise", it makes sense....

Default Re-masters of "Walls and Bridges" & "RnR" ?? (so)

I just wish EJ wasn't so high in the mix. He's louder than John. When
I first heard it, I thought it was an Elton John single...

Default Re-masters of "Walls and Bridges" & "RnR" ?? (instrumental love)

"Beef Jerky" is the "Telstar" sort of instrumental that Johnny had
probably always wanted to make. I love it.

Elton's voice dominates the first half of the song, but listening to the track
one can hear the voice of John getting louder as that of Elton gets gradually,
hidden deeper in the mix. By the end of the song John has take complete
control of the song.
Elton was important to John at this time in this respect.

Default Re-masters of "Walls and Bridges" & "RnR" ?? (so think)

I remember hearing the demo of Beef Jerky at Record Plant, and it was
great - I don't think it ever came out -I was so surprised when Menlove
Ave came out and it wasn't on there - it was cut at the same session
with all the other Walls and Bridges demos.....

Here's a bit of trivia - looking at the tape boxes, I figured out that
"Walls and Bridges" was the working title for "#9 Dream". Then it was
"Dream Away", then "9th Dream" (a la Dylan), then finally "#9 Dream".

The other day, I noticed that a lot of my songs have parts where I sing
about one word per measure and I wondered where I got that from. Ok, I'll
buy that I got it from John. Sounds a lot better than I need the time to
remember the lyrics.
