Default What did you THINK in Summer 67 ?

Many thanks to all of those who contributed to the thread : "What did YOU do
in Summer 67 ?"
It was great.
To help figure out the VERY SPECIAL ATMOSPHER of those great times, 3
additional questions, for those who were lucky enough to LIVE those magical
days.

1) What were you interested in ? What were you ready to fight for (or
against) ?
(Vietnam, Civil Rights, Sex, Drugs, Music, Politics,
Business.............................)

2) Did you have a model ? A reference ? Somebody who inspired you ?
Who was he (or she) ?
(Jim Morrisson, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Lyndon Johnson, De
Gaulle, Staline, Mao, MLK, Gandhi,
Marcuse........................................... ................)

3) What kind of books did you read ?

Let us make another step backward, 36 years 1/2 ago...

I was living in Chicago then. The following late summer, I ran downtown
because a gazillion hippies were showing up to protest the Democratic
convention. And as we all know, Hippy Girls don't wear bras...but that's
another story.
What do I remember about the Summer of Love? Well...I was making $120 a
week, and I spent it all at "Rose Records" at Wabash and Adams....

Default What did you THINK in Summer 67 ? (love fancy)

Man,I was interested in changing the world!Total revolution through
visionary music,communal co-operation and love,love,love for the
people.I was a little bit schizoid in that I dug the ghetto rebellions
jumping off in Detroit,Newark, and other urban ghettoes but I was still
representing the hippie peace and love ethic.if truth be told,I wasn't
ready to start looting and shooting. No way in the friggin' world!I
started running with SDS and some BSU cats in Fall of 1968 and their
riots were no way as intense as those in the cities.
I didn't have any specific heroes. If you were a truth teller and
had the right vibes I would follow you on your journey.
Books?Well,Heinlein,Siddartha,Kerouac caught my fancy.I was still
deep into history and race relations books.Oh,and Krishnamurti!he was
my man who put alot of the world's contradictions in perspectives for
me.
I was very socially inept with females back then.I would go up to a
woman and deliver a line like"You are a beautiful flower child.I want
to bathe in the warmth of your eternal love".
Really,REALLY naive!

I hated Lyndon Johnson as I have never hated any public figure before or
since. To me he symbolized everything that was wrong with America. And in
hindsight I must say that as much of this was about his *style* as about his
political agenda.

DianeE, still shallow after all these years

Wow. Rose Records. I was a 15 year old in Naperville. I ran away due
to some trouble at school (rather scared to go home and face the music)
and I slept in Union Station all night. I went to Rose Records by
accidnet and bought my first import...A Collection of Golden
Oldies-Beatles. I'd never seen it before. I wish I was close enough to
Rose's now just to skip amongst the offerings.

(Yeah, I did eventually go home).

This belongs in previous thread (What Were You DOING...)
Here you should post what you thought about being in the Nam, and how
you felt about getting shot.

Default What did you THINK in Summer 67 ? (m time)

I'm in Canada. I was in high school at the time. We didn't make wars and
there wasn't need for civil rights. We were pretty civil. There was,
apparently, sex, drugs and music though. At the time (1966-'68) I was in
Vancouver and all that great Summer of Love stuff would filter up the
coast from San Francisco. It was an amazing time. We were quite immune
to the boring, conservative Eastern influences of Toronto and New
York. Politics became cool in '68 with the election of the hip Pierre
Trudeau. Business? Bachman Turner Overdrive would take care of business
in the Seventies ;-).

Jim Morrison was probably the role model for most youths. He was
admittedly cool and provided some great music. John Lennon was just a
Beatle, no real individual influence. Hendrix was really happening.
Hendrix was the man in 1967 and '68. But as I recall, it was basically a
tie between Morrison and Hendrix as most important Rock star.

Lyndon Johnson? Oh please! De Gaulle? Irrelevant. Stalin? Dead as far as
I know.

The 1967 Summer of Love was followed by the heavier, more sophisticated
music of 1968. But it all crashed and died in late fall of 1968,
followed by the Great Depression of 1969 (a horrid year!) from which Top
40 music never recovered. As much as I thought things couldn't possibly
get any worse, they did - The morbid Seventies!

Didn't read books; radio was where it was at. ;-)

What did I think in "67? I was a teenager - I thought and thought about sex
and more sex. Finally even experienced it. To hell with politics!
