Yikes! A jump from Soundforge to Protools - they do very differen't things
They are both excellent, and very well designed - I use them both a lot.
I know it's a hassle but it would be really helpful to get the exact error
messages - the one for when it says "increase buffer" and the one for when
it says "decrease buffer". Are you sure you are getting one that says
"decrease buffer"?
I expect you won't get much help from Digi support - not that they aren't
helpful, but that it's a really hard thing to troubleshoot "increase buffer"
errors. The errors show problems not so much with CPU speed but data
transfer speed - and this could depend on any number of things from hard
disk speed to the speed of the hardware data buses. This is why they say to
always use a Mac for guaranteed performance! (I'm not advocating using a
mac though!)
Have you turned off disk indexing on your laptop? If not, then this might
ease the problems, but I expect that unless you throw more money at the
problem (i.e. invest in the Glyph firewire drive), it won't help much.
That said, you don't want to get a firewire drive unless you've tested one.
The only proper solution I can think of is that you make friends with your
local music shop and ask them if you can buy and try it - and if it doesn't
work then get a refund. I know a shop here that does that. Or else borrow
a friend's for a bit???!
Hope that helps
