Default What trumpet recording do you find to be the best of all time? (time technique think)

"the first recordings of virtuoso playing I heard were those made by
Herbert L. Clarke on old scratchy 78s. "

"Clarke demonstrates what many seem to forget, that trumpet technique
had already been pushed to incredible levels long before "modern"
players came along. And he was amazed and influenced by the players who
came along before him, many no doubt who were never recorded.
As a small issue, I was under the impression that Clarke's recordings
were mechanical recordings on cylinders and that he never actually
recorded electronically. Did he ever record on 78's?"

Yes, I had several 78's of Clarke which were stolen. However, I don't
think he ever recorded electronically. They were all mechanically
recorded in the same fashion as the early cylinders.

I've wondered myself if he couldn't do it or did it that way for
stylistic reasons. I have a hard time believing there's anything that
Wynton can't pull off technically, except maybe extended circular
breathing.

This album should be in EVERYBODY'S collection. Clark Terry sounded so
good during this period (1960-1965). I have a couple of transcriptions I
just did from that album on my site at

http://www.shout.net/~jmh/terry/transcriptions.htm

Clark's plunger work on "Blues for Smedley" is a clinic.

Another great one to get if you can find it is the "Gerry Mulligan Concert
Jazz Band / Live at the Village Vanguard" (on Verve, limited CD
release). Clark really steals the show in a couple of places on this
album.

I have that on a 12 inch 'pizza'. Blueport comes to mind as to Clark
stealing the show.

Back in 1978-79 I went to Mendez's birthday party in Studio City Ca.,
Everyone brought their trumpets and played happy birthday to Raphel before
the dinner. During the dinner they played his recordings, and at the end of
Moto Perpetuo, Raphel got a thunderous standing ovation. It was wonderful
and very heartfelt by all... What a great day, and so many great players..

When they say the "Kenny G of Trumpet", I assume they're referring to
someone playing somewhat vacuous music getting a lot of public
acclaim.

Even if you don't like the pop stuff he does, isn't Kenny G. actually
a fairly accomplished player? Or am I wrong on that. Any sax players
reading this? Herb Alpert always struck me as very limited on the
instrument. No particularly impressive chops or technical skills. I
heard someone describe Alpert as "The Christopher Cross of the
trumpet" because of his somewhat spastic, "pulsing" dynamic levels.

Gee, the best I can do is three (and this certainly isn'l all of the
"best")...

Freddie Hubbard - First Light - yeah I know, it's a CTI album and has
strings and stuff, but Freddie's playing on this thing is just
gorgeous. I've been listening to this since it came out.

Miles Davis - well I could name just about any of his,but for here
I'll say Milestones. Awesome.

Bill Dixon - Vade Mecum vols I and II. Yeah, he's 'out' and all that,
but he's got a great sound on the horn, incredible low register
command and a totally different concept.

Bonus: Any Lester Bowie album!

You're right about technique. I was just thinking of a trumpet player that
had a lot of pop appeal and wasn't ashamed to take full advantage of it
career wise. I personally think its a good think when an instrumentalist
can do that. People like Al Hirt, Mason Williams, Liberace, Floyd Cramer
come to mind.
