I love the a3000, nice filters lovely effects. But it has been
superceded by software.

Absolutely, and then some.
However, software is useless without hardware.
I still can't fit my computer in a 19" rack (I could fit the rack in
the computer, though).
A laptop would be an alternative.
However, the money needed to buy a laptop will buy me several A3000s.

Not that expensive. Youve seen Cariilion Audio PCs I presume? Very good
and Quite affordable.

Indeed.
I wonder what could replace my gong, chimes and darbuka.
I also wonder what could replace my Pulse and my TR-707.

Ok fair enough, you are talking about "real" instruments now not
hardware synthesizers. Although a computer will do a pretty good job of
recording them for you.

Any number of softsynths out there. Have you tried the latest versions
of Vaz, Reaktor and Waldorf Attack.

I have a Waldorf Pulse too but I dont use it anymore.

Luck,

I use Kontakt and I have to say its an absolute boon for both realistic
sounding multisamples and for more experimental sounds. I love it. Its
ease of use is also hugely better than ANY hardware sampler I have ever
owned (s1000, s3000, A3000).

Luck,
