Default Best "first" classical piece for a child to learn??

Are you introducing this to the child as a future listener, or as a future
performer? Based on your implied criteria for "simplicity", the latter
would seem to be the case, but before making suggestions, it would help if
you would clarify what you mean by "to learn". Also, my presumption is
that, if you ARE talking about performing, you're talking about piano. Is
this assumption correct?

Yes, Karen, it should be a piano piece for a child to learn to play.

Schumann: "The Merry Peasant". Easier than "Für Elise" (though perhaps
not much easier), especially at the start, where it gives the tune to
the left hand; straightforward programme; bearable to hear well under
speed.

One last question: Do you object to classical works that have been
"arranged" for beginners? Are you seeking only classical works that were
