The OTHER Song which begins with 'ban ke suhaagan'.


I have slightly changed the order of my 'OTHER' series
posts. Two Lata songs for Hemant Kumar go first. To me,
and I imagine to most people, the words 'ai dard-e-jigar'
mean Lata's song for C Ramchandra in Parchhaa_ii.n. Hemant
Kumar had also composed a lovely song starting with the
same words. And the words 'ban ke suhaagan' can recall
only one tune in my mind, the sublime Lata solo in Aadhii
Raat by Husnlal Bhagatram. Ironically, this song itself
has been 'other'ed into obscurity by the relatively more
popular masterpiece from the same film : 'dil hii to hai
ta.Dap gayaa'. But I treasure 'ban ke suhaagan' a lot.
Once again, Hemant Kumar had composed a song beginning
with 'ban ke suhaagan'. It is a loud, boring song which
portends the 1960s noise in film songs. It has enough
trappings of a 'song' to be called one but lacks
creativity.

Ganti pointed it out to me that he had already posted the
lyrics of Hemant's 'ban ke suhaagan'. But I had
transcribed the song before I was informed. I am taking
this opportunity to make a few minor corrections to the
lyrics. Though the OTHER song is in the ISB, its more
memorable counterpart is not in. Its lyrics, 'ban ke
suhaagan' in Aadhii Raat, will follow soon.
