Friends and Morons –
I had been looking for 78s by Gauhar/Gohar Karnataki
for some time. She was a fairly prominent name
in Hindi Films in the ’30s, acting,
composing and singing songs, most/all of which were never
released on 78s and are probably lost for ever. Her sister
Amirbai’s name is far more famous and many brilliant songs
sung by Amirbai are easily available today. Before her most
prolific years in the ’40s, Amirbai sometimes sang under the
name ‘Amir Jan’. Gauharbai’s name appears as ‘Gauhar
of Bijapur’ in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh pages. Gauhar was
devoted to Bal Gandharva; BG left his family to live with
her. There were whispers around 1950 that Gauhar, whom
BG used to call ‘Baba’, had cast an evil spell on Narayanrao
Bal Gandharva, whose surname was ‘Rajhans’. The Gauhar
episode in BG’s life has been treated at some length in
Ravindra Pinge’s beautiful article on BG, titled ‘Chandraast’
and included in the book ‘TuShaar aaNi Taare’. Whatever
manipulations she may have resorted to, even her detractors
concede that her devotion to Bal Gandharva’s style of
singing was genuine. It is not surprising that many of her
78s are of Marathi songs sung in BG’s style.
A friend says that Gauhar’s music could be heard on AIR
around 1960 under the name ‘Gauhar Rajhans’. It is
possible that some of her 78s carry this name.
Gauhar Karnataki should not be confused with Gauhar Jan,
the thumri singer, who was among the earliest recorded
Indian singers in 1901/02.
Recently, some of Gauhar Karnataki’s 78s were tracked down
by a friend; I was lucky to get hold of some of them. A brief
excerpt of her Jogiya is available at Rajeev Patke’s site.

It is always my friend told me. When who and why well that is another
Goharbai was married to Balgandharv. He did not leave his house. He
had no one in his house. She used to act in his plays in later part of
BG’s life. She was certainly one who took care of BG. In 1965 or so
Vile Parle Music circle invited both of them. BG could not sing. She
did. It was far from good though she had Balgandhrv touch. She sang
Mam Atma and a bhiravi. The words I remember were Shevatcha din God
Vhava. No one even thought that BG would out live her.The recordings
are certainly older. She was not very “recordable” as I heard her. Bg
did call her Baba.I remember BG saying WA Wa while she was singing.
In fact when BG told Atre that he was planning to convert and marry
Goharbai Atre in his usual sting said” Narayanrao you have many
Chamtkar. However don’t do this chmatkar.
