I sent a Spectraflex cable back for repair (twice!) because whenever I
bent the cable near the jack, such as setting the bass down, it made a
godawful crackling noise.
They told me:
The weird thing is, the problem was reproducible with two amps (pre-1996
Baby Blue II, two year old Mesa guitar combo) and 4 guitars (one year
old Clover-Sandburg, 12 year old Tobias, 2 year old Tom Anderson, 30
year old Gibson Les Paul). None of this stuff is junk or particularly
beat up. None of our other cables have any problems. I was really sure
that the cable was defective when I sent it back.
What sort of tests should I have done (other than switching around the
stuff I was plugging it into)? How can I tell if my jacks have problems?
In any case, their customer service guy Dave Russell was very friendly,
and they fixed it for free.
