As some of you know, a Fairport fan called Colin Edwards runs an FC
There is a thread on the board where dozens of people have expressed
pleasure at the success of Dave Swarbrick’s operation and wished him
moment to think of (and pray for, if you so wish) the donor and
his/her family. I hope they can take comfort that lives can be
enriched or saved by their actions.”
Board-owner Edwards responded:
“Well don’t put a damper on it then. I think that being a donor should
be a totally unselfish act. Don’t expect thanks, or even to be
remembered …” Edwards’ point seemed to be that it is enough that
those close to Swarb are… “relieved and happy.”
Apart from the sheer tactlessness, I find such lack of kindness and
meanspiritedness rather depressing.

I have no idea why Andy feels that he needs to launch a personal attack
on me, by quoting just the beginning of a post, out of context. It
continued by saying:
“…and most importantly of all, don’t lay any guilt on the recipient.
Those close to Swarb, must have been through a huge emotional upheaval
over the last few days. Allow them to just be relieved and happy.”
I was just expressing my opinion, that as a card caring donor, the last
thing that I would like to see is my death ‘putting the dampers’, on
anybodys joy. That’s not the idea.
Andy Farquarson does Fairports does public relations. Goodness knows
what this is all about. I’ll now we walking away quietly.

Pray tell us, Nigel, the connection between FC, and a nasty comment by
another individual on a message board. That just looks like a s***

With respect[#1], I think Andy did you a favour by not quoting the rest of
your post, and by doing so yourself you’ve merely dug yourself a deeper
hole. To me, your reply seems to miss the point of the original post . .
However it also seems clear to me – from the tone of what you are saying now,
for example – that there was no intention on anyone’s part to cause offence
or distress to anyone else; hopefully all parties can simply see things as
unfortunate misunderstandings at a time when emotions are obviously rather
highly charged, and leave it at that?
Best wishes to all involved!

I am not sure why this post comes from “Nigel McKenzie” – I assume it
must be a nom-de-plume of Colin Edwards’?
Three brief points in response:
1) My post was certainly not intended as a personal attack (when
riled, I can ‘do’ agressive and personal invective but that certainly
wasn’t an example). The post was what it said it was: an expression in
a free uncensored forum of my surprise and disappointment that anyone,
let alone a webmaster/moderator, would slap down on a
publicly-accessible website such a generous-spirited expression of
decent human sympathy.
2) The fact that I (or, rather Iconic Music, of which I am but part)
undertake press and publicity work for Fairport Convention (among
several others) seemed at first totally irrelevant (aside from the
swarb/FC connection). But now that “Nigel” has brought it up, I
suppose it is slightly relevant in that as Colin Edwards hosts
Fairport’s website and has a common front-page gateway to both FC’s
site and the bulletin board in question, people probably assume FC is
“officially” connected with the board (which is not the case) and, by
extension, some *might* assume implicit endorsement by FC of the
board’s owner and moderators and of the views s/he expresses on the
3) If I have over-reacted to something which I saw as an example of
hardhearted insensitivity, it might be because I have attended three
funerals in the last ten days (the most recent of which was that of a
folkrock fan who died of cancer at the age of thirty-six) and the
experience has rather heightended my empathy with, and sympathy for,
the bereaved – including the loved ones of the donor of Swarb’s ‘new’
lungs. George Hawes wrote:
I accept that view.
You are right, George. I made my point. Colin defended his position. I
am happy to metaphorically shake hands and let the matter drop.

I’m afraid that it’s glaringly apparent that Mr Edwards and his
cohorts at the Folk Corporation are very Orwellian in their policing
of the message boards therein. If the sycophantic party line isn’t
toed exactly, postings have a strange habit of disappearing withoiut
As I understand it, though, this is a strategy not without risk. Such
zealous censoring of what is allowed to be said leaves those
moderating with no defence against being liable for breaches of
copyright which might take place on those boards, whereas unmoderated
fora at least have the defence that those responsible for posting are
responsible for posted content.
Colin edwards 2012-06-20 19:44:12
This is entirely false.
Messages that include personal comments are removed, as are “me to’s”.
There is nothing mysterious, in that the authors are informed of all
modifications to their posts. It’s done to prevent the flame wars, that
all other boards seem to descend into.
(Only four members have ever been banned and two of them have posted in
Whatever, it’s a thriving community.

that he could find, apart from the TalkAwhile bulletin board. Nothing of

Interesting fact that – I naturally assumed that FC were officially
connected with FolkCorp’s board, but it seems not.
I agree, though, that perhaps it’s time for this thread to quietly
wither on the vine.
