Every book (and I) say that it should be pronounced cat-lee-yuh.
But at orchid shows and even on a gardening show on TV last weekend, I hear the pronunciation from almost everyone as cattle-lay-yuh. What is going on here? Are both correct? Mirriam Webster's website has it as cat-lee-yuh. This is a stupid little thing that has been bugging me. -Jen. YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "orchids" on the web. Hi Jen -
I'm with you, I've heard it pronounced both ways, and also cat-uh-LAY-uh. I think whoever's plant is the nicest gets to choose... The ones that get me going are Coelogyne, Cycnoches, Iwanagaara - suh-LAW-juh-nee, sick-NO-keys, and ee-wan-AGA-ara Or so I've heard! Until I hear someone *else* say new names, I'm afraid to jump in and try them out; my guess is pretty consistently (ridiculously) wrong. Then again, they are mostly based in Latin, as well as the name of the person who got to 'dub' the genus - so I *can* figure out how to say 'Wilsonara'. And nobody I know personally speaks Latin (at least not on purpose). There used to be a couple of webpages with prohunciations (as well as deciphered abbreviations), but on checking, both are apparently defunct. Regards - Nancy ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Pay attention, boy. It's funny but I used to pronounce it cattle-lay-yuh until I also read that it was supposed to be pronounced cat-lee-yuh. I still prefer the sound of "cattle-lay-yuh" though, glad to hear there are still people out there that use it.

I think the correct pronunciation is Catt-ley-yuh. I have heard them
discussing them in the AOS judging room when I go to my meetings in Long Beach. --- In orchids (AT) yahoogroups (DOT) com, Steph <binkylin@...> wrote: > > It's funny but I used to pronounce it cattle-lay-yuh until I also read that it was supposed to be pronounced cat-lee-yuh. It's very easy to pronounce most of theses names, just sound them out phoneticly. cattleya cat-le-ya it's not catt-uh-ley-a, just look at the word again, that's too many sylables for it, your mind is playing tricks on you!

Hey Jen,
My understanding is that the fact that Cattleyas were named for John Cattley the proper pronounciation is Catt-lee and so the Orchid is Catt-lee-ya..there is alot of mixed opinions on this but I stick by what I perused as you've done already. Here in Maine folks say Lilocs instead of Lilacs and Wee-gee-leeya instead of wy-gee-la...and most houseplant growers say San-sev-erias rather than San-sev-ier-ias Keep speaking as you've done and just learn to deal with others alternative pronunciation. kfb Jen <jenura (AT) aent (DOT) com> wrote: Every book (and I) say that it should be pronounced cat-lee-yuh. I have enjoyed everyone's take on this topic. I will take Kyle's
advice and deal with all the alternative pronunciations. -Jen. - In orchids (AT) yahoogroups (DOT) com, Kyle Baker <kylefletcherbaker@...> wrote: > > Hey Jen, > > My understanding is that the fact that Cattleyas were named for John Cattley the proper pronounciation is Catt-lee and so the Orchid is Catt-lee-ya..there is alot of mixed opinions on this but I stick by what I perused as you've done already. Being from a country where a latin derived language is spoken it is
easier to me to pronounce these names. But not so simple. The names in latin are written, when derived from a person name, like it was in its native language with the proper termination, but is pronounced as latin. But, this complicates me how to tell you how to speak. I´ll do my best. As said, Cattleya came from from the name Cattley with an "a" as terminator. The simplest way is to speak Cattleya as Cattley with the "e" pronounced as the first "e" in "else" (openned "e" . The "a" is pronounced Here in Brazil is common to write this pronunciation as ka-tlé-ia (note the ´ over the tonic syllable. In Portuguese the syllabic division is different from English)) Just to tease you, Coelogyne is pronounced as ce-LÓ-gi-ne (the first and second "e"´s as in t"e"mperature (oe in latin has a not openned "e" sound), the "o" as in logic, "i" as "ee" in gee) nancy escreveu: > Hi Jen - > I'm with you, I've heard it pronounced both ways, and > also cat-uh-LAY-uh. I must agree that if the orchid was named after William Cattley,
it should be pronounced just like his name, with the "ah" sound on the end. So the question now becomes: How do you pronounce Cattley? Is it kat-lee? Or Cattle-ee? The mystery continues, although it won't change how anyone once to pronounce it. -Jen. --- In orchids (AT) yahoogroups (DOT) com, Gustavo Denarde Nogueira <gustavo.denarde.nogueira@...> wrote: > > Being from a country where a latin derived language is spoken it is > easier to me to pronounce these names. Using your way to transcribe the phonetics:
kah-tlé-yah with the "e" like the "e" in mess For instance, here in Brazil we pronounce Cattley as káh-tley. The ´ tagging the tonic syllable.
