I would check out the local orchid society meetings. They have raffle tables which consist of plants usually brought by the speaker. At $1.00 a ticket you might win a couple orchids if you buy $20.00 worth of tickets. Also at the meetings, members bring extra plants that they sell with a portion of the money going to the society. These plants are usually very healthy and disease free and a good bargain. Some are in bloom and some are babies. If you buy babies, factor in the time you have to wait for blooms (and try to figure if you will kill them before that time) bec time and space can be used for bigger plants that give more immediate satisfaction. The sales table plants are usually great bargains, but you can always ask someone's opinion about the plant. www.aos.org has info on local societies, their locations, meeting times and contacts. That site also has lots of info on culture, books, vendors and orchid shows. It seems that societies have sales in the fall and spring (right now in fact!). Orchids bloom at different times of the year, so if you go to the shows keep in mind you may not see a plant you're looking for bec it isn't in bloom. If you can, try to go to the show at Santa Barbara. Lots of vendors and orchids to see and buy! Good thing you can grow outside. That greenhouse may fill up fast. Costco website usually has some nice affordable greenhouse packages. If you like big cattleyas, Marty's Orchids in Hawaii (rushpo on ebay) has great huge plants and wonderful bargains.
