Default It's been a long week...

Our Rosie ended up in an emergency vets office last week, she was
vomiting, not eating, and was pretty much unconscious. I didn't think
she would last through the 20 minute drive. They put her on IV fluids,
and took x-rays. No obvious blockage was seen.

We transferred her to our regular vet, and they did subcutaneous fluids.
She passed something, which we thought might be what was causing her
problems. She perked up, began eating and drinking, and all seemed well
for 3 or 4 days, then she started vomiting again yesterday.

We got her to the vet right away; they did another round of x-rays. They
thought they saw a blockage, but weren't sure if it was food in her
system, so they had her stay the night on IV again so they could do a
barium x-ray today.

They did surgery, but didn't find a blockage. The vet was getting ready
to close her up, when he thought he saw something that looked odd.

It turns out she had a hernia, and her intestines were pushing into her
chest cavity. It appears that they moved back into position after the
first episode, but then pushed back into her chest the other day. He
fixed the hernia, and drained a lot of fluid from her chest and stomach.

She was in surgery for 3 hours. We are waiting for him to call back (he
is staying with her until he knows that she is OK). He says that if she
pulls through from the long surgery, she should be fine.

She is young and strong, and is a feisty little thing, so we are
cautiously optimistic. I won't feel better until she's home with her
buddies, though.

A sick ferret is scary. Been there, done that. I'll keep Rosie in my
thoughts and prayers.

Rosie seems to be OK. Last night the vet called and she was awake, but
groggy. Today, she's awake, trying to get out of the cage, and bit the
vet when he took her temperature (not hard, and can you really blame
her?).

They are going to keep her on subq fluids for most of the day, and pain
meds. They will try to give her a little food late this afternoon. If
she eats well tomorw, she can come home tomorow night.

Wow, never even heard of a ferret getting a hernia, but obviously it's
possible. I'm so sorry your Rosie had to go through that, but it sounds
like you got her in in time. Keep us posted.

In article <1120615007.220040.204470@g49g2000cwa.googlegroups .com>,
tuffyencompany@aol.com says...

She seems to be recovering well. She is eating and drinking normally,
and has her energy back. We have her in a separate cage until her
incision heals. We let one of our more gentle ones sleep in there with
her occasionally, so that she doesn't get too lonely. She should be back
in the main cage by the weekend, if things continue as they are.

She looks rather ridiculous, with her shaved stomach and front legs, but
the hair is coming back.

If anyone needs a good ferret vet in Connecticut, go to Cromwell
Veterinary Hospital. If it wasn't for Dr Fertini, I think Rosie wouldn't
be here.
