Default Birdies in the spring

Ok, first of all I'm not a troll...something often suspected I know when theres
a very odd question posed. Mine is this. Is it possible that a male conure
could be exhibiting mating type behaviors with (on) a human like male dogs are
known to do? Mine has me thinking this is happening with a particular member of
the family. Wont go into details there. Ew!

TIA!
Linda

Yes, it is not uncommon behavior. There is no reason to be put off by it.
It is natural animal behavior. You can interest him in toys or anything
else that may distract him. When you see the behavior, hand him off to
someone different or take him back to his cage. There should be absolutely
no punishment of any type for this instinctive behavior. And if you're up
to it, plan some education for children who may be ready to learn from this.

Here is a link to my story used by some educators:

It may be a start to become more comfortable with the topic.

It's called 'masturbirding'!

And it's not an odd question at all... birds have their needs too and I
betcha most of us in this group have been, at one time or another, the
"love toy" of some of our birds. They'll do it on your hands or feet or
hair or ears! eeek indeed. Once you understand it's normal it won't be a
big deal... Sometimes it's funny as heck too... like when when you try to
explain to your granny that the bird has an itch and that's why it's
rubbing against that toy. Or when you can hear the honking of a horny
amazon a block away.

Don't worry... your bird won't grow feathers on it's feet or go blind or
go to hell. So let him hump away! Just don't stare... it's not polite! LOL

I must confess that I do stare when a male lovebird is doing his silly dance
to try to impress a mate. I'm probably getting odd(er) but I'm beginning to
think I can tell how good they are. Yesterday one of them called Lemon was
putting on what I thought was a very good effort when the object of his
affections got bored and just flew away while Lemon was in mid-twirl. He
literally turned round and she was gone :-) I felt very aggrieved on his behalf.

No, not unusual at all. I've had everything from lorikeets and an imprinted
American Kestrel Falcon masturbate on me at the zoo I used to volunteer at
in front of a bunch of kids (birds have no shame), as well as ****atiels,
conures, and other parrots at the store I used to work at (what was really
interesting was that the 'tiels were 15 weeks old, *really* young, and no
where near breeding age. As my boss put it "What were those kids watching at
home?!"). Here, I've had several female 'Alalas (Hawaiian Crows) 'solicit'
me for breeding (sorry sister, ain't gonna happen). In general I try to not
allow them to do it on me, although sometimes it can't be avoided.
