Hi,

I recently read an article in a food magazine about the green lettuce like stuf
called mache. It's popular in Europe as a salad green.

I picked some up at the local grocery store last week, and it is quite tasty.
I've been holding off feeding it to my parrots until I learn more about it, and
confirm that it is non-toxic.

Can anyone help? Does it go by another name? Has anyone fed it to their
birds? I don't want to be a guinea pig!

Mache, also called lamb's lettuce, has been cultivated in France since the
17th century. But in California's Salinas Valley, the tiny, dark green plant
with the sweet, nutty flavor is making its American commercial debut under
the auspices of grower Todd Koons. Koons helped launch America's love affair
with bagged spring-mix salad, and he hopes to duplicate his success with
Mache

My parakeets eat mesclun or spring-mixes all the time. They all seem to be
doing well. When we mentioned to our avian vet that they enjoyed mesclun mixes,
he just said not give them a lot of it at a time. To be sure, speak to your
vet about it.
