Any suggestion on what works best. I've used Ornascale for months
without much improvement. Is it possible the mites are gone, but scales
persist much longer?

Not licences for birds, but I have used frontline spray. It is a flea
treatment for dogs and cats, but I have used it with no ill effects on
various birds and poultry. Spray it onto a bit of cotton wool or a Q-tip
and dab onto the affected area. Aftyer a week, soften the scaled with
some olive oil massaged gently onto the legs.

Do you know for sure that he has mites? Some birds, as they age, or that have
inappropriate perches, or a vitamin deficiency, can get a thick scale, on their
legs, called hyperkeratosis.
This is a site on starlings, but you can get the general idea.

Actually, ivermectin is not an organophosphate.
It is a derivative of one of the avermectins, , a group of macrocyclic
lactones produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis .
