Please can somebody tell me how long a 'budgie' will live for, we are
thinking of getting one for a pet, but have no experience of keeping birds,
are they difficult to keep?

After waking up from Jigglypuff's lullaby fully refreshed on Thu, 09

I just got 2 budgies 2 months ago...I did not know anything about them
either...But let me tell you, they are a pure joy...I work a few hours
in the morning...And when I get home, they start 'yelling' at me
because I was gone...They are very easy to keep...I clean out their
cage daily, feed them, watch them play when they demand
attention...There is nothing like watching them take a bath...In any
water dish I give to them...I have regular and small size water
bowls...And they will wash their heads in the little one (it has a
cover, supposedly to keep the water clean, yeah, right) and use the
bigger one for the rest of their little bodies...They do make a lot of
mess, but it sure is worth it...I think they live to be about 10 years
or so...I do suggest getting two...They are social like humans...If
you are gone for long periods of time during the day, they can keep
each other company...Cheers!!!...

My current budgie is 13 years old. Recently got a budgie baby friend
and they are getting along extremely well after 4 days of "I'm so scared
of you I can hardly look at you without freaking out." Now they are
feeding each other. Keep in mind that Cody has not had another cage
mate for his entire life. However, he IS in love with our Lovebird, and
was very friendly with our Cockatiel (also 13 years old) as baby birds.

Recently, I purchased a large flight cage and placed Cody, my older
'tiel, a baby 'tiel, and a baby budgie together. (The 'tiels were
allowed to get used to each other first for a couple of months.) While
my older 'teil is annoyed with the young one, the budgies have bonded to
one another, and Cody is also interested in the young 'tiel.

Budgies are a joy, expecially when they get to know you. They play and
chatter constantly!

Tips:
- Rotate toys often.
- Make certain water is very clean. (change 2X A DAY if you must)
- Feed high quality foods and supplement with fresh fruit, hard boiled
egg yolk, and mineral blocks/cuttle fish bones, and spray millet
- Get the biggest cage you can afford, especially if you don't let them
out very often to fly and play.
- Talk to them every time you walk by -- if you have a male, and he
cocks his head to listen to you and watches you speak, he may start to
repeat your words.

I've had budgies most of the time for about 45 years. The longest I've
been able to have one live for is about 8 years. My avian vet though
has had one for 13 years. I try all sorts of varieties in their diets
and let both of them out of their cage for exercise. Tumors seem to
kill most of my budgies which my avian vet said is pretty common for
some reason.

These are just regular pet store variety budgies. Their cage door is
open for about 14 hours a day or so, so they can get all the exercise
flying around the room(s) that they want and I've tried about every
fresh fruit or vegetable to add variety to their diet. Most all of
them seemed to ignore the veggies and fruit but will eat millet spray
quite easily.

And if you're talking about causes of death, don't forget about falling
unnoticed down the back of the radiator, and heart attacks.

Our budgie, Cody, is going on 13 years and we just introduced him to a
baby budgie for the first time in all those years. Our cockateil is a
few months younger than the budgie at 12+ years old.

We do not smoke in our home. There are no chemicals besides diluted
chlorine bleach used for household cleaning, and when we paint or need
to use chemicals, an air purifier is used and/or the birds are taken to
a well-ventilated area.

No scented candles are left burning near the birds. Best quality foods.
No external stresses (overhandling, lack of attention, placing
incompatible birds together, extremes in temperature). Lots of toys
changed frequently.

All our pets live long and prosper. Our kitty is going on 19 years old
soon. Other cats have lived to 15-20 years of age.

Our ratties, which had a life expectancy of 1-2 years, lived for 4+.

Learn what your pet needs and go out of your way to provide it - you
will be well rewarded.

And one of my Budgies likes to stand on the ceiling fan. When the fan is
turned on the lowest speed and Jimmie Hendrix is playing, he will dance too!
Go figure. One crazy bird!
