Default OT Slightly - Petco got fined

I heard on the news this morning that Petco (the 2nd largest pet store) was
fined over $250,000 for over charging people and mistreating animals. They
also have to spend $50,000? on properly training their people in animal
care.

After having some issues with buying a sick budgie from them, it's about
time.

I almost bought a budgie at a local Petco. I decided to go somewhere else
though because they weren't very helpful. Glad I did.

Petco doesn't seem to know much about birds. Look at their web site, even,
and everything's about dogs and cats. They do carry some bird products that
Petsmart doesn't carry, but nothing I wanted ...

Petco to pay $900,000 to settle two lawsuits

Petco Animal Supplies Inc., the nation's No. 2 pet supply chain, will pay
more than $900,000 to settle two lawsuits that accused the company of
mistreating animals and overcharging customers.

The settlements announced Thursday resolve both a lawsuit against the San
Diego-based chain brought by district attorneys in four California counties
along with a separate action filed in 2002 by San Francisco's city attorney.

Petco, which admitted no wrongdoing as part of the settlements, agreed to
pay fines totaling $600,000. The company also will spend more than $200,000
to install improved pricing accuracy equipment at all its California stores
and more than $101,000 to cover the costs of the district attorneys'
investigation.

GOOD! Well, it's a mere slap on the wrist for them, unfortunately. But
after all the evil I've heard about Petco, it's about time indeed. Now,
if we could get them to stop selling live pets in the store...

I routinely visit my local Petco store *just* to give attention to the poor
imprisoned birds - a sweet, but somewhat depressed-looking Goffin's ****atoo,
a Blue & Gold macaw (very friendly), and a feather-plucking Timneh African
Grey (who is also a very sweet bird). The last one hurts the most because
I have one just like him at home. Only *my* birds aren't kept in prison
cells all day and all night, unlike Petco's.

I had the same experience with them twice before a long time ago.

*Most* stores I've seen sell HAND-FED ****atiels for that price, but the
non-hand-fed, non-socialized birds are typically $40 to $60 US. I paid
$130 for my hand-fed and very well socialized ****atiel (NOT from Petco,
mind you - they don't take care of their birds anyway).

I'm at odds with this as for as Petco over charging. Who's to tell
them how much profit they should make on a sale? If this is the law
then why haven't the pharmaceutical companies been hit? Or the oil
companies.

After a bad storm the states usually look at food stores and gas
stations to see if they are overcharging (gouging) and they do this by
comparing the prices before and after the storm.

So far so good.

The overcharging involved was on their advertised specials - say a 20 lb bag
of dog food for $10.00. Then, when someone purchased it they'd get charged
$10.99 or something like that.

By over charging customers, they don't mean that Petco is charging an unfair
price. They mean that Petco is charging more than the advertised price
whether it was in a newspaper advert. or just on the little tag on the edge
of the display shelf.
