Anyone have any good advice about getting antibiotics into my budgie who is
currently suffering from Psittacosis? He wont take wet food and the stuff
tastes bad.

Help?

^^ Bex ^^ <bex@darkwave.org.uk> says...

What did the vet recommend?

If by syringe, did he give you a demonstration? If not, why did you leave
there without one?

I'm not that daft! She advised in the drinking water but he won't drink
it. I suffer from a dire lack of avian vet hence I'm hoping to learn some
useful tips from those who have 'been there before'

I am so glad you actually know that it is psittacosis for sure Bex. At
least you know it can be cured. Does your bird like eggfood? Offer a
teaspoonful daily with the antibiotic in it.Or offer a little mashed potato
and see if he will take that. Perhaps mix the eggfood with applejuice to
disguise the taste. What antibiotic is he on?

I hope you are going to see him soonish.

I really hope this vet knows his stuff. If he

Your current vet is dreadful. Could you email me and let me know who it is
so that I can warn other bird keepers to avoid them.
Have you any idea which bird brought the disease into your home?

you better ask your vet to give once a week an injection with
oxytetracyclines in the thoracal muscle; he/she should have known better
that parrots don't like medication in their water or food!

Actually he's recovered (that post was very old). He wouldn't take the
Baytril as it tastes foul, but he was totally fine and indeed cured by
Doxycyline in his drinking water.

Parrots may be fine with jabs but the state my poor budgie was in it would
certainly have killed him (a jab killed my first budgie sadly) Bex

Hey Bex!

How's Magic doing? Back to his normal feisty self I hope. So is
MacDaddy...he's giving kisses when asked and even making the smoochy noises
to go along with them! I just love my budgie to pieces!

Take care,

Laurie

Bless him! Magic is back to his old self, chatting to us in budgie,
kissing Charlie, moulting ten ton of down feather and crapping on my lamp
shade during fly pasts!

LOL...well, if you get yourself a hot glue gun, you could make yourself
another budgie with the molted feathers! It's that season again here
too...looks like a little blue bird blew up! And I think we have matching
lampshades! It's Mac's favorite place to sit because I have beads on the
edge of it...and now and then *his* little beads as well!

Give him a kiss for me!
