Bear is a 2 yr old black long hair neutered male. He has started
staying out at night lately. I saw him Sat morn and he didn't come home
till Mon afternoon. He doesn't feel well and last night I saw him
straining to poop but no resuts and no sign this morning. I will take
him to the vet today but what could be going on? I have some of that
black charcoal stuff. Should I force him to take some? Thannks

Take him to the vet. He may have an impaction. Don't delay.

Thanks I just talked to the vet. She will try to see him this morning.
I have a repair man coming at 9 as the washer quit and I am teaching a
class 2-4. I will take him in as soon as the repair man leaves. The
vet told of a cat that was plugged by a breast milk pad it had eaten.
She will give Bear an enema and then an xray if needed.

Straining in the litterbox is often a sign of URINARY obstruction, not
poopy problems. He's probably shifting his stance upright as if to poop
while he strains. Urinary obstruction is a COMMON and DEADLY problem in
male cats. Get thee to a vet!!

Please don't force anything on Bear unless the vet advises it. hope you get
to the vet as soon as possible.

I had seen Bear pee so I knew it wasn't that. The vet had to give him
several enemas and keep him 2 days and nights. She had a hard time
getting several 'knots' of hard stuff out of him. He's done now and I
will go get him when they open the office. The vet kept asking if he
had been out of water. Bear had been missing 2 days. Would that have
been long enough for this problem? I keep water in both bathrooms, the
garage, front and back porches.

Do you feed him canned food?? That would help provide more water in his
diet. Glad you took him to the vet and he's OK. It's also good that you keep
a lot of water dishes for him. If he's on dry food, I would switch him to a
high quality canned food.

I have 5 other cats but they are all shorthaired. I put canned and dry
food out, several kinds. At the vets office they said I should feed all
the cats hairball preventative food and I have to give Bear Laxatone
twice a week from now on. They said he had the worst case they had seen.
And I thought he was so healthy. Thanks for your concern. It's nice to
have a place to look for advice besides the vet.

Maybe some of you remember when I asked for advice 2 yrs ago when his
mom was stuck giving birth and I couldn't reach a vet. The first kitten
died but this one, Bear, was fine. He is so cute with his long black
fur and very affectionate. When you pet him he doesn't just lay there
but has to get up and take part, rubbing againt your hand and giving you
head-butts.

Well, I feed hairball remedy food, and have for at least five years,
and my cat still became semi-blocked by hair, so nothing is a
guarantee.
