People and allergies

Wondering if anyone has any knowledge of what current drugs are out
there (prescription or over the counter) that are good for people who
are allergic to cats.

Seems to me I recall seeing a commercial recently, but I can't remember
what the drug was!

The "cat mold tree pollen" marries the "dust grass" commercial? I think
that's for Zyrtec. The best person to ask is your allergist of course, who can
prescribe something effective that is right for you (and how the allergy
manifests itself). I take several asthma medications as well as an
antihistamine and nasal spray. I am allergic to many more things than cats as
well - most people with allergies are.

My son was allergic to more than cats, and he'd get a prescription that worked,
but it would seem that after a year or two, it wasn't as effective and the doc
would switch. The current one is Zyrtec, which works well. He started with
Allegra as a kid, went to Claritin after that. But you know what? The biggest
difference I saw was when I got especially diligent about vacuuming, bought a
HEPA vac*** and two HEPA filters.

I seem to remember a Zyrtek commercial where they said it was for all
types of allergies, including pet dander. I take Claritin OTC, but
only for general/hayfever allergies. My b/f has pretty good results
with a non-addictive OTC nasal spray called NasalCrom.

I hate Zyrtec, it is too strong! I like Claritan. Over-the-counter,
works on cats, dust and mold. You can use it when you need it and you
don't have to use it every day.

Claritin works very well for me. This may or may not be available in
your country.

The advice of my doctor was this: To be most effective, it should be
taken daily rather than upon occurance of the symptoms.

His other advice was to get rid of the cats and clean the house up from
top to bottom. This isn't an option, getting rid of the cats. I don't
consider the other suggestion of cleaning the house optional either... I
don't like dirt! Clean yes, dirt no!

Thanks for all of your suggestions. For those of you who mentioned
various products (clariton, zyrteck, etc), do you experience
side-effects like jittery-ness, etc.?

FYI -this is not for me, but for my son who has a terrible time whenever
he comes over (which is not that often, needless to say). He'd like to
be able to come over for Thanksgiving and not suffer.

I take zyrtec for something other than allergies, and it has never given any
noticable side effects. Some people say it makes them drowsy, but I've never
noticed it.
