Default AFRICAN Grey Parrot VS ****atoo (Umbrella)..............

Hi,

I am looking to buy a parrot and would like your advice on which breed of
bird is the best, obviously posters will be biased toward Greys , this being
an African grey group.

Umbrella ****atoos are very friendly , intelligent and amusing but Greys are
excellent talkers and some say rather a bad temperament???????????

Honest opinions of breeders who have experience of both these birds would be
most welcome.

Thanx

Terry

PS I am based in UK (Newcastle) and if there are any local breeders who have
young-un's give me a mail..

OK I am not a breeder, but I have an umbrella and a Grey. Get the Grey.
Way easier to live with.

Don't get an umbrella ****atoo. They are needy birds which scream very
loudly and will pull all their feathers out and chew holes in themselves if
you neglect them. go to http://www.mytoos.com and turn your speakers up high to get
the ful effect.
What do you mean by "bad temperament"? You basically only get out of a
parrot, whaty you put in. You cannot simply get a bird, expect it to amuse
you when you want it to and ignore it when you are busy. You cannot put a
pot of pet shop parrot mix in the cage with the occasionaly g**** and expect
it to live a long healthy life. Did you now about sunflowers being bad for
parrots? Did you know about peanuts being bad for birds? Did you know that
salt, avocado and chocolate can kill birds? If the answer to these questions
is no, then don't consider getting *any* bird until you have done some more
research.
If you have never had a bird before why are you looking at high maintenance
birds? Have you considered any other species? There are no bird breeds by
the way, just species. Before you go looking for breeders, look for diet
info, and buy a book called 'guide to companion parrot behaviour'. It will
describe the traits of bird species but also give info on other species.
As regards feeding, go to http://www.robharvey.com and look at witte molen parrot
premium which you can get mail order, also do a google search for parrot
diet. They need a range of fresh fruit and veg daily, and that means quality
stuff not just apple and g****.

I also agree that an Umbrella ****atoo requires a lot of attention and if
you have any
other birds watch out. I have a Blue Fronted Amazon then about 6 months
latter I purchased
an umbrella ****atoo. When the ****atoo was a baby she cuddled and the
Amazon and ****atoo
played. But when the ****atoo was about 6 years old she began to get mean.
She demanded
me to play with her 24/7. I could not leave her in the room alone she
screamed like I was killing
her. If I wanted quiet I had to have her on my lap when I was watching TV
if I stopped petting her
she would nip me. Then I was in an severe auto accident and my sister and
mom cared for her
then she became wild. I had her to the vet, and many people tried to figure
out what was wrong
no one could help me. after she grabbed my glasses off my face and broke
them 3 times that was it
the final straw was she split my ear 2 times that required stitches.

In the end I gave the bird to a guy who had a petting zoo. This bird loved
him she was a different bird
the strange thing after she was gone for a year. I went to visit her she
was tame again and very gentle
the guy told me she has been like that from day one.

I love my wild caught Amazon parrot she is 15 years old now very seldom
bites talks and plays a lot

yes the ****atoo was a hand fed baby, even the pet store who sold me the
bird was amazed how she was
acting. The breeder even tried to see what was wrong and she got bit too.

take care

Given the choice between a bird that is friendly, smart, entertaining and
enjoys company versus one that makes sounds that mimic human words but
dislikes people, I'd take the former.

HAHAHAHAA!!! "Hey, kid. This is Chopper. She sent a guy to the hospital
twice for stitches. Come on over and give her a little pet on the head."

has been like >that from day one.

That's good to hear. Birds are strange. Yesterday at the airport I fly
out of a little starling was sitting outside the glass door flapping like
mad to get inside, and bouncing off the glass. I told the receptionist he
either had to use the restroom, or he wanted flying lessons. I went around
to approach him and he flew to a rhodedendron bush and then tried to fly
through the window.

I suggest you browse this website first:

http://www.mytoos.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

FYI, ****atoos tend to have worse temperments than greys.

The link had already been provided. You are repeating old news.
The last statement was just silly. In what way are ****atoos "worse
temperament than grets"?
In what way worse?
I take it you don't actually *have* a ****atoo?

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that the fact that YOU posted made it "old
news." I didn't read through the entire thread - I simply came, saw, and responded.

I suggest you go read that message board to find out. In the meantime, since
you're a bitch, this is the only response you get.
