the first taken inside the indoor bit. I wish I had a wide angled lens. The
others show outside. There was a birch tree stump in the flight which I used
to prop a large ash tree branch on. The other branch is hung from the roof.
There are som toys and swings in there. On the floor is a thick layer of
'hemcore' which smells nice, can be swept up and composted when mucky and is
very absorbant. I left the floor bare earth underneath . At the back of the
aviary I made a footpath with huge heavy duty slabs, some 4 foot wide which
will stop any vermin burrowing in, plus the floor of the inner bit is
slabbed because I will need to scrub that out as the guinea pigs live there.
As the aviry is close to the house and the 10 dogs have free access all
around, and the front faces my kitchen door where the cats come and go
through the catflap, I doubt I will have any kind of vermin problem as
regards rats or mice, so was able to leave the flight floor as it was.
Otherwise I would have had to slab it or concrete it or wire it.
So far all the birds have integrated well with no squabbles at all. My 2
tame gcc took a bit of time adjusting to being outside and I know they miss
me as they hang onto the wire and yell "kissy kissy kissy" and "'ello likkle
parrot" and make kissing sounds at me when I go into the kitchen to make a
cup of tea. I just had a nice new double glazed door and window put in so
there is a nice expanse of glass for us to see each other through :0)
With the birds all in the new aviary it means I can start work in the
middle room of the house now, pulling down a nasty ceiling to re-expose the
original beams, open up the fireplace, and make that my sitting room.
