Dog in pain after hiking
I agree, for the most part, but some dogs pads dont' callous, apparently.
I have a dog who has perpetually wimpy pads. This dog skijors, hikes and
pulls a scooter in summer. We have tried everything, including some topical
stuff called "tuf foot" or something, and his pads simply remain soft and
smooth as a baby's butt. I finally gave up trying to toughen the feet and
started him on booties for any of his pulling activities - he is fine on
hikes. I prefer cheap booties to muttluks, but generally keep him in
neoprene. That way I can keep the foot wet with cold water, to prevent
overheating in summer.
