Is pet Insurance REALLY worth it?...
I have a policy. A VPI Gold plan with the Routine Care rider. I usually
get the RC rider amount reimbursed back, and I feel it is worth $100 a year
to have a policy to cover large accidents, as my dog is also my coworker.
(I also have flood insurance in a non-flood area.)
But, don't expect much for $100 a year. Don't file for intestinal worms,
ear infections, etc. Your premium will go up.
In defense of the "New year, new policy - pre-existing clause" - the company
might not cover the chemo or surgery months down the line. BUT - the dog
will get diagnosed (or in the case of an accident, stabilized) in the
remaining policy time.
And, that is why I have it.
The only thing (besides Routine Care) that I have filed for was a Dew Claw
amputation after a backyard play accident on my 110 pound dog. She ended up
in surgery to complete an amputation of the injured digit, and I had the
other clipped off as long as she was under. Also, gave me a chance to get
her hips checked and some misc. bloodwork run, Insurance ended up paying
for half of it. I got my $100+ back this year. Evens out.
