Petsmart is now conducting experiments on pets in Austin!

I recently learned from a longtime Petsmart employee that
Petsmart is conducting experiments on abandoned animals left
at the on-site Vet Clinic. The employee contacted me after she
learned that the Vet Clinic inside Petsmart has been
collecting abandoned pets from nearby Shelters and housing
them at Petsmart in Cedar Park..

The employee has tried to bring this to the attention of local
shelters and Petsmart management. She has been told the pets
that are being experimented on are already condemned to be
killed and that it offers the Petsmart Vets an opportunity to
practice on live animals.

Please help us stop this cruel treatment of abandoned pets!
Some little girl or boy may be out looking for their lost pet
right now, only to learn that Petsmart has killed them to
allow their Vets some practice!!

*** Update*** A Petsmart Vet breaks the silence!

After we sent this Help request to local news media & animal
rescue in San Antonio, Petsmart's on-site Vet service released
a statement this was a onetime occurrence, and that it was
stopped before any pets were killed. We have now learned
(directly from a Vet at Petsmart) that in fact, this is still
happening in Austin & Houston! The statement released by the
Petsmart Vet Clinic (Banfield Pet Hospitals of Portland OR.)
failed to mention the fact that this is an ongoing program,
but instead only addressed the San Antonio Hospital.

NOW the Vets are coming forward to ask you to help stop the
useless killing of healthy pets! Below is a letter I received
from a Petsmart Vet that read the recent article in the San
Antonio Express-News.

Please help us stop this cruel treatment of abandoned pets in
Austin!!

Dear Miss Howe,

Your article in the Express-News was nice, but very
inaccurate. but I'm sure that is because you received false
information from Petsmart and Banfield. I see that Banfield
claims this was a "onetime" mistake by a rogue employee and
that this has never happened before, nor is it there policy to
teach on live animals then kill them.

The truth is, this is (and has been) Banfield's ongoing
policy. In fact, this incident only came to light after we
complained and it was stopped before the 4 dogs in San Antonio
were killed. In the past (as early as a few weeks ago) several
dogs were killed at the Cedar Park Petsmart in North Austin.
Just like in San Antonio, the dogs were collected from a local
animal shelter, they were used to teach the local Austin Vets
how to do a surgery, then they were killed.

Banfield & Petsmart's response to your questions regarding the
incident in San Antonio are less than honest! They
conveniently left out the fact that this was not the first
time they had collected abandoned pets for practice surgeries
which were later killed. Ask them about Austin, Houston, and
other areas. In fact, they are building a "training" hospital
in Houston were they can do this on a mass scale and have
other Vets from other areas come to participate!! It is
scheduled to open in 4 months!

In fact, the person Banfield is claiming is investigating this
"onetime" incident, Dr. Will Novak, Chief Medical Officer for
Banfield, is the person who implemented the policy. Dr. Novak
had about 20 Banfield Vets attend a class at the University of
Mississippi in April were many live animals were operated on
(for practice) then killed. These 20 vets were then
instructed to go into the field and repeat this at local
hospitals.

One last point you may find interesting. According to State
law, a Corporation cannot own a Pet hospital or clinic in
Texas. To get around this, Petsmart & Banfield have placed all
of their hospitals under the ownership of this same Doctor
(Will Novak), and they are operating under the name "A Caring
Doctor". ironic huh? What's worse, Dr. Novak is not a resident
of Texas, nor does he even practice in Texas. He lives and
works in Portland, OR.. And has never even seen a client in
this state. This is definitely an attempt to skirt the intent
of the State Law.

something Banfield had done and gave me their number.
I called Banfield and they kept putting me on hold, finally
the receptionist came back and said I just talked to the
"Client Advocate Team" and they will take your call. I was
then transferred to voicemail. I suggest you give them a call
