Default Fruits/Veggies

What kind of fruits do you feed your GP? Mine just do not seem
interested in anything other than regular food...

Hey Nikki

If your piggies have never seen fruit or veggies before it could just
be that they are frightened of it. Leave it in the habitat for a
couple of hours or so (i.e. piece of lettuce). Let them realize it
won't hurt them. Give them some time. Some piggies take a while to
realize that, that new thing is food and good for you.

Best to give more veggies than fruit. Start with lettuce, carrots,
green pepper, some cabbage leaves, etc. Give fruit sparingly..g****s,
apples, some give oranges, strawberries and so forth.

If you want to know what all they can eat just do a search of this
group for foods they eat.

My three without fail will always eat baby spinich leaves (their
favourite!) tomato and cu***ber - they're always the first bits to go
from their dinner!

They also enjoy apple, cabbage, carrot and brocolli stalks, but not
half as much as the above. Be careful not to give too much lettuce if
you do as it can cause colic.

If you're really struggling and they're refusing still, make sure that
you buy a vitamin spray to add to their dry food just to make sure that
they're not missing out on any essential vitamins (remember that they
can't produce their own vitamin C).

My girls wouldn't eat food from my hand for a couple of weeks, but as
soon as I left it in the cage and they thought I wasn't watching they
would finish it all. Now they'll eat when I'm holding them too, just
takes some time for them to get used to you and the fact that you
haven't poisoned it!

I agree on Annette about this not knowing what veggies are. I have a shelter
pig (Puck) that - when he got to live with us - didn't know about a lot of
things. Besides his pellets, everything was unknown to him. Hay, veggies,
fruits........he simply didn't know what to do with it.

Puck was very lucky to be introduced to a very patient and wonderful
cagemate, named Poocky. Poocky showed Puck what he was supposed to do with
lettuce, cu***ber, tomatoes, apples, strawberries and of course, what to do
with hay. It was hilarious to see how Poocky showed Puck how to "kill" a
strawberry, or a piece of apple, or some lettuce, and then to see Puck copy
what Poocky was doing.

Puck was the oldest of these two neutered boys, but he accepted Poocky to be
his teacher. Puck very quickly learned what he needed to learn. Never ever
was there any fight over food, veggies, fruits, hay, or whatever they could
possibly fight over.

Some three years ago Poocky died of cancer, but Puck is still very much
alive and kicking AND ............ munching veggies, fruits and hay. He'll
turn 5 on April 1.

Wheeks,

Hi!

Have you tried strawberries, apples, g****s or peaches.
My guiney pig loves them. Try not to give them too much because og weight
and bad tummy.
