Ok, we started off with just one Guinea pig not knowing she was
already pregnant at 6 weeks. Tinny had 2 babies, and we gave away one
and kept the one I thought was the girl. Well fast forward and Tinny
had another litter. I thought I was doing good with telling the ***,
but well, last night poor Tinny had her third litter. We are up to 6
now. So hear are my questions:
How can I tell a male from a female? When can I safely seperate the
babies from the mom. I would like to keep them, I have 2 large cages
and would like to seperate the boys from the girls.
How many litters can they have?
Also, we found that Tinny had 3 babies, but it looks like one was
killed. Why would this happen?

Finally, I was talking to a friend and we were wondering what a group
of Guineas are called? I said I have a herd lol.
I think thats all for now.

I have a friend who's a vet and even she says it's tough for the average
person to tell the *** of a Guinea Pig. Find a vet whos familiar with small
animals is all I can suggest!

Females tend to be more docile than males, or so I've found with the 2
females we had, and 2 males we currently have.

According to Wiki, it's Herds of Guinea Pigs...see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_pig for a good overview, including
breeding.

Her's a ***ing page with pix:
http://www.cavyspirit.com/***ing.htm

Male babies need to be removed from mom and any sisters at 3 WEEKS of
age or pregnancy is possible. They can keep having litters until
their bodies give out, and I know you don't want that! Best to keep
them separate at all times if you'd like to keep them all. The baby
was probably born dead, which can happen up to 25% of the time.

I've always called them a 'herd', too. I don't think there's an
official term.

Thanks for the help. My girls (ages 9,7 and 5) LOVE the Guinea Pigs,
and were really upset at the idea of having to give away any of them.
They really are great pets, and I admit I was a little upset at
thinking I would have to give some a way. So thanks!
