Default Pigs and supermarkets

Here is some 'Americana' for the historians.....The forerunner of todays
supermarkets was invented by Clarence Saunders who opened a 'self serving'
store in Memphis,Tennessee in 1916. He called this store...'Piggly Wiggly' !!
(yes this is true)....wouldn't it be nice to think the worlds first supermarket
was named after someones pet pigster !!!

Oh, yes...As a wee young lass (back home in San Antonio,TX) I remember
going to the Piggly Wiggly every week!!!...Their logo is/was a
pig!!!...IIRC, he had on an apron and a chef's hat???...Many of the
have sadly closed down, there are still a few operating in the deep
south IIRC... :-)

I use to live up around the Black Hills of South Dakota and there were
several Piggly Wiggly stores. We use to shop at there. Not sure if they are
still operating up there. The pig with the apron was an actual farmyard pig
not a cute GP!! I think they should of used a GP pet pigster.

Speaking of grocery stores - I live in the Phoenix, AZ metro area and alot
of the grocery stores aren't guinea pig friendly. They have alot of stuff
for cats, dogs, birds and fish but not too much for our cute little
pigsters. Albertsons & Wal Mart are the only gp friendly grocery stores in
Phoenix area.

Amazingly enough, Safeway has GP supplies on the West Coast. They
actually have pellets, the good kind (always fresh) plain and at a
decent price. I can't believe it, but it's true.

Pet shops here have a limited range of 'piggy' acessories but are expensive,
the only useful product i buy from supermarkets are the abrasive 'cage floor liners'
used in bird cages....i put these under feed bowls (no-pee areas) and it helps a
little to keep their nails short. They last for ages if placed in an area the little
pigs dont normally soil!....I have wondered about the seed bells for birds but suspect
there is probably something not pig friendly in them (but may well be wrong there)
