Default Skinny Pig

I was in Petsmart today and say a hairless guinea pig labelled as "Skinny
Pig". Apart from a few bristles on it's nose it was completely hairless,
and very cute! Does anyone know if these animals are good for peole with
allergies?

TIA,

Jacqui

LOL Couldn't Jacqui then just knit a warm piggie sweater?

(please don't get me wrong: I think pets should have their own fur, but I
just couldn't resist)

While they might be less likely to cause allergies to fur, rememeber,
many allergies are to DANDER, which are skin flakes.

Please, do not purchase a baldwin or skinny pig from a pet store. There
has been a race of these pigs into rescues. Skinny pigs can have
reduced immune systems, and are even more prone to problems like
ringworm. Since many guinea pigs you purchase from pet stores are ill,
purchasing a skinny from a pet store is even more problematic.

These guinea pigs eat more than regular guinea pigs, a noticable
amount. This is because their motabilism is faster.

Thanks for the info - some very good points! I wasn't actually
contemplating purchasing one ($55.00 is out of my league, even if I wanted
one!), but was just curious. My local SPCA always seems to have rats &
guinea pigs for adoption if I wanted another. Thanks! Jacqui

$55 is actually cheap! They have been selling them for $80-150 at some
places out here!
