Default puppy potty problem

Hi all, I have a 6 month old lab. I've always had older labs and this
is my first pup. With the others I was able to very quickly train
them to do their business in one small section of my yard. It's
always been great. With this pup I seem to be having some trouble.
He seemed to take to it pretty fast. I'd walk with him out to the
spot, about 175' from the house, and he'd go. I'd praise him,
sometimes we'd play. I slowly started to not go all the way down
there with him and he still did good. Then I would just go out the
back door and tell him to go pee. He was, and still is, 100% with #2.
He got up to about 90% with #1, had dropped off to 10%, and is now
back up to 50%. We can be in the back yard for hours and he won't go.
If I walk over near that area he comes running and then goes. If we
just go out the back door and I tell him to go pee he just sits and
looks at me. If I go back inside and leave him out he will sit on the
deck looking in the back door. Even peed on the deck once. But the
second I start walking down there he runs and pees. On the times he
does go down there on his own he usually only goes half way and then
pees. He also sometimes leaks some when he gets excited. What can I
do to get him to always go down there on his own. I have other
questions about his behavior, but I'll save them for later. Thanks
all,

Dave

Labs love to please and are always looking for approval and from the
description you give he is not sure he is allowed to go that far unless you
go with him. He's a puppy and is looking for your approval you've cut off
the training too soon and need to start again. It's time to start back to
walking out with him to the area he is allowed to use. I would walk the
whole way for a month or so then a little at a time cut the distance you
walk out with him and do it gradually say maybe 15 feet at a time for a week
the next week work it up to 30. Eventually you'll get to stay on the porch
and he will feel comfortable going out on his own.

My one dog will not even go off the porch till I tell her it's ok to go
pee.

This is what I did the first time and I am doing it again now. Most
of the time he doesn't make it all the way down, sometimes only 10 or
20'. I just say "bad pee" and leave it at that. On the rare occasion
he goes all the way down I praise him a bunch. I gotta keep remonding
myself that he is still a pup and try and get my patience back.
Thanks.
