Default Deciding between a rabbit or guinea pig

Hello

I live in an apartment and would like to have a pet. I'm choosing between a
guinea pig and a rabbit. I would greatly appreciate a little help with the
following questions.

1. How difficult and frequent is cage cleaning?

2. How much do the food costs average?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Caring for a rabbit correctly is a time consuming and fairly expensive
proposition. Visit http://www.rabbit.org

I had a Rabbit and my sister had a Guinea Pig and they both enjoyed each others
company... All though, My sister had more medical bills with her Guinea Pig
than I did with Pepper my rabbit..... Its all on how well you take care of
them... All pets are considered time comsumming though... I spend hours a day
now with my dog.... Its all up to you>>> Good luck on deciding....

You might want to check the guinea pig group, too.

I've never owned one, but I hear they "wheek" a lot.

Rabbits are virtually silent.

I don't think GPs can be litter-trained. Rabbits can.

The average lifespan for a GP is less than half that of a rabbit.

Rabbits may gnaw, and if you let yours roam, which we favor, you must
protect wires or your pet may electrocute itself.

Vet expenses for a rabbit can be way high--many people are not prepared
for this with a pet whose initial acquisition costs can be modest.

Why don't you meet some of each species?

Many shelters who rescue rabbits also have GPs.

Rescues are a great place to get a pet, learn about its personality, and
save--or greatly improve--a life.

Let us know if we can help with info on a rescue in your area.

Nona

Something that is not being mentioned is the fact that most bunnies will try
and eat your home right out from under you, lol, which is generally an issue
with landlords if you do not own your own home. they will chew baseboards,
wall corners, etc.. soak carpet with pee until they are litter box trained
and even then if they are not neutered or spayed, will continue to douse the
carpets and rabbit pee smells HORRIBLE.. I am not trying to turn you off to
a rabbit, just giving you more info.. it is possible to rabbit proof a home,
or at least a room, even if it's just a large bathroom where it can stay
while you're not home to watch it constantly. Yes they seem to LOVE stereo
cables and anything else plugged in. While that is destructive to your
belongings, it's very dangerous to the rabbit doing the chewing. I think
guinea pigs are probably more ok in a large cage than rabbits are.. I don't
have any personal experience with piggies but my neice has several and just
loves them.. they are all in cages alot of the time however. They are sweet
enough but there is nothing as nice as having a rabbit hop up onto your lap
and snuggle up under your neck!

I would think the main difference (between a rabbit and guinea pig) is what
you want your pet for. Our bunny is a free roaming house rabbit. He spends a
great deal of his time on someone's lap (or chest) being petted. He is a
part of the family and wants to be included. I don't think a guinea pig
would be as social or as affectionate as a rabbit.

It has the faintest of oders, and a slightly sweet one at that.

You must be thinking of cat pee.
