Default Harder poops??

Hi APR,

geesh, I haven't checked Apr in such a long time!!!!! I've been
subscribed for a little over 5 years now.

I'm still having serious problems w/ Floppy. She suffers from CPB
(continous poop butt). But's it's getting bad, she almost died earlier
this year cuz she dehydrated herself! I try really hard to help her,
I've changed her food, I give her oats and hay everyday. But she still
get's poopy butt. I know for sure it definetly has to be something w/
her because dipsith is on the same diet and she has never gotten poopy
butt. At first we thought it was fibre(sp?) so we found pellets w/
higher fibre. So we know the poops are passign easier, but I think they
need to be harder so that they won't stick to her when they come out.
Please help if you know what can make poops harder. I need this to stop,
i can't see her suffer.

Harder poops,
Amy

she needs a pro biotic enhancer from the health food store to restore
gut flora. 1/4tsp in water or food per day..

Hi Amy,
Haven't seen you around for a long time!
What sort of hay are you feeding Floppy? Is it timothy? What kind of pellets
are you feeding? You may need to take her off pellets all together and just
feed hay and veggies. All rabbits are different and sometime you have to
feed one a different diet than another.

Make sure you don't give Floppy any treats like crackers, bread, also
anything with sugars like carrots or fruit...and you may want to try taking
away the oats to see what happens. Is Floppy eating greens? Those shouldn't
give poopy butt, but it depends on her tummy. Hope she gets better.

Amy,

In my opinion, the oats may be the problem.

I am ***not*** a proponent of giving oats to bunnies with diarrhea,
though many people advocate it.

Oats are a carbohydrate, and IMO they will just feed the bad bacteria
that is causing the problem in the gut.

I strongly suggest rereading Dan Kremples' wonderful article on GI
stasis (which diarrhea can actually be a forerunner to).

I didn't hink oats were the problem because she needed the fiber for
them to pass easier. Also, when we started giving them to her it looked
better than before.

Thanks,
Amy
PS. I wouldn't consider her poops diarrhea (my personal opinion), they
are round but not hard, just a little squishy. Did I metion she's a mini
lop so of course the fur is quite long and fluffy?

Hi Amy,

Sounds like she has excess cecal pellets.

She needs to be getting her fiber from hay, not from oats. Oats, like
Nona said, do not help a bunny with cecal issues. They can make it
worse! I know one rabbit rescue person who gives her rabbits lots of
oats, and at least half of them have HUGES masses of cecal pellets stuck
to their rear all the time.

What kind, and how much pellets is she getting every day? What veggies?
Does she get any fruit? Tell us exactly what her diet is every day,
maybe we can help.

In general, rabbits with cecal issues (and it can be one and not
another) should not be getting people food at all, especially starches
and rich food. Also no junk treats -- like honey sticks, yogart drops,
any of that cr** from the pet store.

What color is Floppy? Some white rabbits with not enough spots, have an
internal issue. Also, has Floppy been tested for the coccidia parasite?

Hi Beth,

I know probiotics help re-establish intestinal flora, but do you know if
it helps their ce***? It almost sounds like this is a cecal pellet issue.

Just wondered if you have heard that probiotics would help in those cases.

Rhonda, this is a good question that no one has answered satisfactorily.
The bacteria in the probiotics may not even make it past the acid in the
stomach without being destroyed. If they do make it past, they would go to
the ce*** with the low-fiber food.

Many people swear by the probiotics. However, many scientists say it won't
work. I guess the best thing would be to try one and see. I hear that
ProBios (for horses) is okayed for rabbits. BeneBac (for birds) is also
okayed.

Thanks for the info (everybody), I'm hoping i'll be able to try all
suggestions made.

Floppy gets about:
2 handfulls of Rabbit Chow Complete Blend a day
1 tea spoon of Quick Oats
And a continuos supply of water and 100% sweet meadow timothy hay.

Is this stuff ok?

Thanks,
Amy
