Default Metacam safe or not?

Hi all,

I know I've asked this before, but I'm getting mixed responses from vets in
my area...

Is Metacam safe for long term use in rabbits, and in what dose? I know some
of you use it for elderbuns with arthritis and I need some feed back if
possible. How long you've used it, dosage, blood work results, etc.

I asked my vet for Metacam for Thumper (12 years old, arthritis) My vet said
Metacam is ONLY for dogs and in cats can only be given for 4 days before a
chance of liver damage occurs. I don't know what to think

Arggh!!!!

Thanks in advance...
Christine

Bear received metacam every day (once a day) for over 6 months. We
didn't have blood work done, though.

Hi Christine,
This thread was on my disabledbun group today and just recently on my
petbunhealth group. There are many people who have elder and disabled buns
on metacam long term without any ill affects reported. Cocoa is on it,
probably has been for about three months daily. His kidneys were in good
shape, so he didn't get any blood work done, but it is a good idea.

He is on the low end of the dosage level. I'm going by http://www.medirabbit.com
dosing, as the dose my vet prescribed wasn't enough to make any difference.
I appears from what I've been reading on my groups that many vets don't have
a full understanding of metacam and rabbits, especially in the area of
dosage.

Christine, many rabbit vets have put their stamp of approval on
Metacam used long-term for rabbits. There have never been any ill
effects reported if used as directed.

The doseage depends upon the concentration marked on the bottle, the oral
metacam that the local rescue has works out at .1ml per Kg for a mid range
dose.

From the bottle ~

1.5 mg/ml, and I give 0.2ml/kg first dose. then 0.1ml/kg daily thereafter.
Target species is dogs, no mention of any other species.

My thoughts on pain meds are that they should be short term only, the
removal of whatever is causing the pain being the actual goal.

The late Toffee was starting a high and slowly increasing level of pain meds
when I had to make the call

Thanks Steve, I just started Thumper on glucosamine/chondroitin about 8
weeks ago. It seems to have helped a bit, at least it hasn't gotten worse. I
just got his MSM capsules today in the mail and he now will get the
combination daily. I'm going to hold off on asking for the pain meds until
it gets really bad. I also think part of his strange hopping is because he's
blind and deaf, all he has to go on is smell and memory when he's getting
around. I guess he has no reason to stand up on his hind legs if he can't
see anything, hehe.
