Default OT/ A Jealous Life Form

man.... I tell ya what!! I thought it was strange when the Sgt. Major got
jealous of his own fur but for my 8" Plecostomus to get jealous?? I never
knew fish could get jealous! over last weekend, we picked up 2 algae eaters,
some black and neon tetras and a small 2" pleco.... no big deal, I
introduced them into the tank, all was well.... and then today I noticed
something really odd... upon closer inspection, I noticed that it was the
little pleco.... the large one attacked the smaller one in what I think was
a fit of jealousy. I wonder if that big thing really and honestly felt
*that* threatened! goodness! heaven forbid another fish gets nose rubs! yes,
that big pleco comes to the surface, sticks his nose out of the water and
I'll run my fingertip over his nose and he'll close his eyes! I know it
sounds weird and to actually see it is kinda freaky! =)

That is amazing ... I guess fish can have feelings too, but I never knew one who liked to be petted.
I think you have all your pets spoiled <bg>

unfortunately, the little guy didn't make it.... he "disappeared" for a few
days (this is in my 55 gallon tank!) and today.... well, that's why it was
weird to see it and I had to look closer (though it probably would have
helped if I put on my glasses to see...) so I'm a little puzzled.... I'll
have to ask my vet if that's normal when I reschedule Precious's appointment
for her spay....

=) Kids and pets.... I love spoiling both! my cat lives in the lap of
literal luxury.... he's got a soft and comfy new rocking chair that he's
taken over (I finally got my glider and ottoman!!) my bunnies have all the
hay they could possibly want, they go on walks, get played with (Todd and I
play "basketball" with a cat toy and his food dish when it's empty) they
have their own hepa filter.... my fish get their tank vacuumed out about
once a month and new plants and landscaping every 6 months and they love
their treats! I've even begun to set out food for this neglected stray black
and white cat. Poor thing is so scared to be around people and he's always
trying to sniff my cat through the door (good ol' Shinobi... he watches that
other cat through the glass and barks if the other cat gets too close) and
when Shinobi does good, he gets some dried catnip on his scratching post,
when he's not so good, I don't focus on it!
my kids.... my son has this really cool hotwheels racetrack.... we have this
deal.... in order to improve his reading skills, he has to read the packages
that the cars come in. we sit and play for hours with those tracks! my older
daughter and I are trying to coordinate a "girls" night out with a friend of
mine and her daughter. and as for baby Alyssa.... hehe... all babies get
spoiled! ;-) cool thing is that my kids are all cuddle bunnies and are very
protective of each other.

one who liked to be petted.

I think you have lucky pets and lucky kids ... It would be a great world if all pets and kids had
such wonderful homes.

Yes, fish *do* fight just like any other animals. (We have a large
tank as well. Bala sharks and various Barbs... Our very first fish,
by recommendation of the 'store expert', were swordtails and tiger
barbs. The second day, our ONLY fish were the tiger barbs. <Burp!>)

The 8" one was defending his territory - one of the things fish can
understand is competition and even a 2" one will grow! It could be a
sign that your big pleco is *really* happy and doesn't want to share
anything.

While you may be peeved at his anti-fraternal behavior, it is nice
that at a size of only 8" he's coming up for nose rubs. I've seen the
behavior in >1' pleco's but not in the little ones before.
