Default Poop & Cecal Question

Lately I have noticed that all four of my buns have been acting differently
when it comes to cecal and poop. Wendy has had an over abundance of cecal
lately (I seen it in the cage or on the floor) and Hershey even had some in his
cage too (never seen that from him before). Everyone seems to be digging at
their butts and munching excessively lately too. They are all even eating
regular poops. My hubby has noticed this too and we are dumbfounded. We have
made no changes whatsoever in diet, food or treat giving. What can be the
cause here? I am kinda concerned. I thought this behavior meant they are
missing something in their diets, but like I've said we have made no changes.

Default Poop & Cecal Question

Hi Lisa,

Hmmmm -- that's a strange set of things to happen to all four at the
same time. Do you get a full bale of hay at a time? Does it look like
you've run into a richer section of hay, or one that looks different at
all (more weeds, etc)?

Are the rabbits eating more in general? My rabbits have been scarfing
down hay for the last 6 weeks or so, I think due to the season change
(they somehow believe they have to fatten up for winter.) Last night, I
found a couple of tiny little things that looked like pieces of cecals.
I wondered if since they are eating so much more hay, that the same
amount of veggies, carrots, or other thing in their diets are setting
off a chain reaction. Maybe a normal amount of carrots is now too much,
for instance, because of tummy full of hay. That's a guess on my part.

How old are your rabbits? It seems like from others on the board, about
one year old is when some get extra cecals. It always appeared to me
that diets they could handle as babies, become too rich when they slow
down a little and become adults.

The fact that your rabbits are eating regular poops too, almost seems
like they want more fiber or are just more hungry in general. I haven't
seen mine do that -- except Buns did it a few times years ago. Maybe if
the hay is rich, the poops are rich... don't know! Maybe they are
fattening up for winter, too.

Thought I'd throw in a few cecal and poop thoughts.

Good luck with that mystery.

Rhonda

My first thought was also your hay. There are richer hays depending when it
was cut or the weed content. Cocoa occasionally gets more cecals that aren't
always explained by his diet persay...then I think it must be the hay.

Default Poop & Cecal Question

I did get a full bale of hay from a local dealer (first time I have done this),
but that was way back in May or so. They have been eating tons of it lately
though. Maybe that has something to do with it. Its just strange that 4 of
them have the same habit. Wendy, Cartman & Boo Boo are all 4 years old and
Hershey is two. This is the first time they all seem afflicted with excess
cecal at the same time. I hope it just passes, everything else seems normal.
Thanks for the reply Rhonda!

Default Poop & Cecal Question

Hi Arlette - I got my hay from a local dealer who had it shipped from Canada.
I bought it back in May I think. Its the first non-Oxbow hay they have gotten
in over a year. I am just puzzled over this whole situation.

aside from the hay being the possible culprit, are they getting more treats
since you're home now?

you may not realize it, but when you're with them more, you tend to give
them more treats. at least i know i do that.

hope you figure it out lisa.
