Rituals
Wow, Nona
Rituals! Jump and Merlin's lives are filled with rituals.
Brenda is up first. The boys are waiting for her as she comes down the
stairs. After she opens their cage door, before they come out, they
wait for her to put down the red carpet on top of the cage door . That
way they don't catch their feet. Then they go in the kitchen where they
spent most of the day. Before he eats, Merlin pushes the trash pail and
his cardboard box into the middle of the floor where they belong.
Brenda then feeds them their extra high fiber hay.
When I come down stairs, an hour or so later, Jump chases Merlin to the
center of the kitchen where they circle and playfully nip at each others
butts until I pick up the banana. Then they leap in and out of their
food box until they receive their quarter sized slice of the coveted
fruit. I check to see if I still have fingers! LOL. By this time the
extra high fiber hay is all gone. I give them either timothy hay, or
mountain grass.
At one o'clock they circle and sit in front of the fridge for their
veggies. At four the sit in front of the gate to be let into the living
room. Who needs a clock? They watch me take two baby carrots from the
vegetable drawer of the fridge. The drawer is clear and they look in
and can clearly see the supply of carrots. First Merlin checks their
spot behind the couch, he's in charge of homeland security. Now they
leap onto the sectional (couch), then onto the Lazy Boy fold down table
to receive their carrots. Merlin sits on the table, Jump sits on my
chest. We are eye to eye. Jump and I love to do this. Merlin just
loves his carrot!
At eight PM they sit in front of their cage to go home for the evening.
Pellet time! Brenda now puts them home. They get to stick their heads
into the Tupperware where the pellets are kept and take an extra free
bite before their bowls are filled, one quarter cup each. Merlin gets
the red bowl, Jump the blue. Now I think this is cool! They sit in
their cage, waiting in their spots. Jump in back, Merlin in front,
waiting for Brenda to place the bowls in their respective spots. If you
put Merlin's bowl in the wrong spot, he will pull the bowl with his
teeth, until it is in the correct spot.
I never have to pick them up or chase them. They always go where they
are suppose to at the appropriate time of day.. There are even more
routines and rituals, petting, napping, and night greens for instance.
But I have told enough for today.
