Default Semi-OT - Digital Cameras

Only semi-off-topic because I want to get one to take pictures of Aimee! ;-)

I currently have a very nice SLR and plan on getting a digital SLR later on
when I have the $$$. In the meantime, I would like to get one of those
little point-and-shoot babies with the main (only!?!?) purpose being to take
pictures of Aimee.

I know a fair number of you have this type of camera and I was hoping for
some suggestions/pointers. I'm looking in the 4-6 megapixel range, and would
like one that doesn't have much lag time when taking a picture, has a good
flash for indoors and gets down to as close to 28 mm as possible and an
aperture range starting at around 2.8.

Your input would be greatly appreciated. If you love your camera and would
like to nominate it :-) *please* also list the model number. For instance
there seems to be so many 4.1 mp Sony Cyber-Shots out there that it's
dizzying! lol I'm hoping to find one that is on sale at the moment.

Thanks for your help!
Martha and Aimee <What do you mean my good side??? They are ALL good!
humph!>

P.S. I will be joining the chat later on this evening if you would like to
fill me in over there!

I got my wife one of these for Christmas

She's very pleased with it so far. I got it at Best Buy for less than
$200 U.S. It takes movies as well as stills, has a macro mode, uses
regular AA batteries, and seems to be a pretty good bargain.

You were a very nice Santa, Joe. :-)

Could you confirm which file format(s) it uses for still images?

Thanks,
Martha

hi Martha....
I upgraded this Christmas from a Concord eyeQ Go 2000 digital camera
with 2.0 megapixels to a Canon Power Shot A610 5.0 megapixels. My
concord is a great little camera, it takes silent avi movies and some
really great still shots! I had a 512 kb chip that I put in and I can
take well over 100 pics! It runs off of a weird sized battery though
but is easy enough to get from Walgreens. It has a zoom, it shows
thumbnails, etc. As for my canon, I'm still learning about it but so
far, I LOVE it!! it's of course got an autofocus, a zoom and
automatically adjusts to the lighting wherever you are! I can also
choose the resolutions in which I take my pictures. The concord has
about a 5 second delay, the canon is almost immediate! I put in a 512
mg chip and on the highest resolution, I can take about 164 pics.... it
also makes some cool sounds too! I can set it to bark when the pic is
taken or I can set it to chirp like a bird, click or be silent. the
silent feature is perfect if I want an animal to hold its pose! I can
also take videos with sound... talk about cool. =) now when the bunnies
come up to snort at the camera, I can actually catch the sound! The
zoom rocks. I have pics of my cat rolling around on the floor, chasing
one of his new toys and being goofy. I had to learn about some of the
other features not only from the book (it came with about 5) but also
from my youngest brother who's a professional photographer. it also
runs off of simple AA batteries. That makes it easy to replace
batteries in a hurry! I'm not sure if that helped or anything.... most
of the features are located in the menu. otherwise, I've learned it's
best to just take the books into the bathroom, draw up a hot bath and
read. Not exactly a Harlequin, but certainly helpful. =)

It uses .jpg for still images, and .mov (Quicktime) for movies.

My husband bought me a Kodak Z740 Easy Share with 5.0 megapixels and a 10X
zoom. It has really user friendly software and great clarity in the
pictures. I'm not good with all the new technology and this makes it so
much easier.

Good luck with your purchase.

Love and hugs,
Toni & Flapr

Hi martha,

I have a HP photosmart R607 digital camera 4.1 mp with 21x zoom. It
has a movie mode and it save images in jpeg. I really like it. It is
compact (small enough to fit in my hand) and with the zoom I can zoom
right up to Q-tip's nose. The battery lasts forever! I t comes
with an ion rechargable battery and I have only had to charge it twice
sine I bought my camera almost a year ago. I normally though only use
it once a month. The super nice thing is that when you take a picture.
It will tell you if you have a problem with your picture (ie, too
close, too blurry, too much light) and what you can do to correct it.
It also eliminates red eye....In people at least. The only negative I
have found is that it does not eliminate he red eye in bunnies but you
can do that in the program that comes with the camera. I found one on
amazon for 169.00, here is the link if you want to read more about it.

Thanks for the information, Toni. You must be having a blast with your new
camera! Will Flapr pose, or is "run and hide" the operative UHF mission? :-)

Take care,
Martha
