Default Yeast infection in ear?

I brought my bunny, Jack to the vet's today, because he had been
shaking his head alot, and when we did the bunny check-ups this
weekend, we saw something whitish way down deep in his right ear. The
vet did a smear and found no mites, but said she found yeast. He got
Tresaderm drops, two in his right ear twice a day. Tresaderm has
thiabendazole, dexamethasone and neomycin in it.

Has anyone ever heard of a yeast infection in bunny's ears, know why
this would happen, and if the medicine is safe for bunnies? I don't
have any really rabbit-savvy vets around here. This one I go to is the
best I can find, but still doesn't know a whole lot about rabbits.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Go out of your way to find a rabbit vet. Rabbits shake their ears to
shake the wax out. Merlin eats Jumps wax! My very savvy rabbit vet, Dr
Saver cleans lop ears with a Q-tip. Has your vet cleaned your rabbits
ears? I would not do this my self.

Is your bunny a lop, by chance?

Yeast thrives in moist areas. A lop can not shake moisture, dirt, and wax
from it's ear easily.

Tresaderm is safe for rabbits. For a 5 lb. rabbit, it is prescribed, 3
drops in ear, twice a day for 7 days.

Acutally, we will be moving in a few months, and I know for a fact that
there is a rabbit-savvy vet there. If Jack continues to have problems
with his ear, I will go out of my way to get him to the better vet.
No, my vet has never cleaned either of my buns ears, and neither have
I. I remember reading in the past about your bun eating the other's
wax, hehe. My buns are not bonded yet.

Julia,

No, actually this bun isn't a lop. He is a mixed breed that I adopted
the end of January. He has actually been shaking his ears since we got
him. I hope he hasn't had this the whole time. My other bunny is a
Holland Lop, however. Jack is 5.7 pounds. I was told two drops, but I
will switch to the three. Do you have 6 rabbits? Lucky you!

Hi Professor,

Here is a link to my Yahoo Photo album of my buns and my hammie (I hope
the link works!). My Lop's name is Snickers. She is a love bug! What
color is Merlin?

Snickers is SUPER CUTE.

Merlin has longish ears for a holland, and is brown and white, with a
white underbelly. You can see some of my pictures on Webshots.

Your pictures are adorable! It looks like you have two lops? They
both have down ears. I thought only lops had down ears. Your yard
looks lovely. What lucky buns! Thanks...
