Don't know what's wrong with my mail server, the other messages I posted
earlier never showed.
Art was fine last night playing and eating etc.
When I got up I found him laying on one of the cage shelves not wanting to
move.
I took him out and he just wanted to hide, seems really tired and
does not even want treats or hugs.
The vet says his chest sounds fine, his temperature is fine, he gave him an
antibiotic jag and I have to keep giving him re-hydration fluid (which is
really difficult as he does not want anything) I've tried him with a few
different flavours of baby food, yoghurt and egg which he normally loves but
he just wants to hide under a towel.
He is not quite ten months old.
I am really worried about him.

Art very ill please can you advize
Art was back at the vet today, still very lethagic and only eating a little,
his ketones and protein are sky high again, but with totally different
symptoms to the last time these levels were high.

For some reason I'm only seeing Samantha's reply to your message and not
your original message, anyway I just wanted to say that I'm sending healing
vibes Art's way. Hope you can get to the bottom of this, and he makes a
good, quick recovery.

Hi,
An update on Art.
I took Art back to the vet the following day, by then he was more hydrated,
poor wee guy I hated having to force him to drink.
The vet tested his urine and his protein and ketones were sky high, (they
were the same a few weeks prior but with totally different symptoms)
Art started to lick baby food from my fingers and the following day he
started eating solids again.
He is now back in with Tar and totally fine. I really wish I knew what was
causing this so that I can avoid it happening again.
I have stopped using rodent litter, they are both on a totally healthy diet
(they were before but being even more dilligent now).
The vet has no idea what has caused Art to be ill. I really thought I was
going to lose him and it is so good to see both Art and Tar back to being
healthy and happy.

So glad to hear he is well again. I can understand how puzzled you must be
as to what's causing this - did you ever get any replies from the post you
put on the veterinary advice newsgroup?

Hi Keytones and proteins can be a sign of kidney problems, the keytones can
also be a sign of diabetes. Keytones can be dangerous, and can put your rat
into a ketotic coma if they remain high. It can also cause the urine to have
a distinct smell, sort of like acetone, the nail polish remover smell.
There are a few things that you can do, one is to buy some Ketodiastix, the
ones that measure both Keytones and Glucose in their urine. You need to
measure that on a few occasions each day.
If it is diabetes, it can be treated quite well with diet.
