I was wondering, hamsters like to burrow and dig, right? What would
happen if I was to add an inch or two of play sand on the bottom of my
hamster's cage and then add the aspen bedding? Would he like it or
would it just irritate him and make a mess? Would peat moss be any
better? It's absorbant and soft. Plus it doesn't have grit that would
get in his wheel and make it squeal. I am looking for an easy way to
accomodate Hammy's natural instincts and desires. He still gets way
too freaked out over nothing (vaccuuming, visitors, thunder, cage
cleanings, new toys, etc) and maybe if he is completely happy and
comfortable he will be more easygoing and relaxed.

Anyone tried this? If ya did, how did it go? If not, why not?

Hammies love to burrow but keep the sand out of the cage. They have
sensitive eyes, plus if they eat it, it won't pass, causing colic.

If you want to give him something to burrow in, give him white,
non-scented toilet paper. He'll go wild over that!

I give my hamster shredded paper and TP to burrow in. In fact one of the
sections of his modular cage is almost completely filled with bedding,
shredded paper and TP. (of course plain white TP, unscented)
