Hamsters can make great pets but are a serious responsibility, just
like any other living creature. They need to have their food and water
checked every day, they need their cages cleaned every day, and they
need vet care if they get sick. Hamsters especially need vet care very
fast due to their high metabolisms.

Some hamsters can be more aggressive than others, it is just all in
their individual personalities... just like there are aggressive people
and non-aggressive people.

Take a look at this website to get more information:
http://www.petwebsite.com

I'm glad you're looking into what is entailed before going out to get a
hamster as it is a huge responsibility.

Also, please keep in mind that there are many hamsters dying in
shelters as there are not enough homes for them. Check with your local
shelter or rescue groups for any hamsters in need of a home. You can
check on http://www.petfinder.org. Or, if there aren't any listed on there
for your local area, ask your local shelter, or rat/mice/rabbit/guinea
pig rescues as they will sometimes get hamsters as well.

Every day?? The websites I've read say once a week (alrthough some do
say that you should clean the toilet corner every day)..

I have to second Christine's suggestion about the shelter. It is a
great place to find a furry friend - and often a litter of babies will
be dropped off, so you have your choice of a tiny one or often one that
is a bit older. Our current ham, Bert, was a rescue ham that chose us
when we visited the pound. He is a wonderful pet.

If you want to learn more about hams, I suggest you take a look at the
FAQ for this news group that is posted by the Rodent Refuge. It has
lots of concise info and is a good place to start to learn about hams.

I only clean mine out once a week, dwarfs especially dont make enough mess
to need cleaning out everyday, my hamsters hate it when it all gets
cleaned, cos it dont smell like their space anymore, so I always keep a
handful of shavings and sprinkle it in their cage when I clean them out so
they dont get too worried.

Yes. We love our mini hammy and he loves us too. When we go to his cage
and call his name he comes out of his little lego house and starts climbing
at the bars to see us. It's so cute. He does not bite because we never
stick fingers up to the cage. When a visitor sees him they always do the
same thing. They stick their fingers up to the cage and say "does he bite"?
And I say "no, but you are teaching him to". I think I like the hamster
more than our dog.
